So where does simple cropping start to part company from the use of a teleconverter? Shooting with a 70-200mm f4 IS lens(at 200mm), then cropping the image to 280mm.....is better or worse than shooting with a 1.4X TC and not cropping......where sharpness is the desired outcome?

Hi I'm looking for a good telleconverter what do u recommend.
I was looking at the kenko Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 2x AF Teleconverter
and the tamron 2x SP AF Pro Teleconverter for Canon EOS
I'm using a canon eos 7D thanks for your help

Here are a couple of samples with the 2x. It all depends on the two lens combo you choose to compile. These are OK, but would be sharper w/o the 2x, but then I would have had to crop them as well. It is a trade of in some cases.

I have both the Keno 1.4x and 2x. I use the 1.4x most often simply because I can't handle the 2x magnification BUT I do like the 1.4x teleconverter; takes my Sigma 150-500 to a nice 210-700 and my Tokina 300 to 420mm which is about all I need / can handle.

If I need something longer, I grab my LUMIX FZ70 (20-1200mm).

I'm not saying the 2x isn't a good teleconverter but it is LONG!!

"Telecon" I like that term. Who wants a plain old TC when you can have a Telecon? It sounds like something from Star Trek. :D

"Spock, get the Telecon. It's our only chance!"

Usually telecon means several people on a phone conversation: telephone conference.

Many camera, will not auto-focusing with teleconverters if the maximum f-stop is f8 or more. For example a 75-300 zooms hat is f5.6 at 300 mm will not aoto focus with either a 1.4 or 2.0 TC.
Exceptions are upper end DSLRs lied the 5D MK III or 1Dx.

I think mohawk51 was talking about more glass elements in the lens for light going through will affect the IQ, not bigger glass. Of course longer focal length lens with larger glasses (larger aperture) is the best, but too much $$!

I know, I speak from experience, just did what I said. Went with a 1.4 III, then a 2x III and last but not least the 600mm f/4.0. Your right, Tooooo much money but I'll only live once so my wife bought me the 600mm f/4.0 for my birthday coming up this week. She then let me know that she was taking over my 300mmf /2.8 and one of the 1.4 III TC. Can you tell that we are both into photography. Me professionally for over 25 years and she loves shooting wildlife .

This is the question everyone should be asking themselves ! This is why I have abandoned optical TC's and gone to the Sony Clear Image Zoom.

out of stupidity and a low price I purchased from Amazon a Vivitar series 1 2XMC4 AF 2X TELECONVERTOR for Nikon lens. What a waste of money. Stay away from this product. Does not auto focus as described and does a poor job when you manual focus.

I have a 20+ year old Vivitar 35mm lens you can put in the same bag... Terrible lens but at the time a great deal! :-(

Well, where does the 30% loss in quality when using a 2x teleconverter? I don't know, and don't believe it, at least for my gear.

I have shot thousands of frames with 300 f2.8 with both 1.4x and 2x as well as 600mm f4 with 1.4 and 2x. I will confess that all gear is Canon and these are the the latest versions of both lenses and teleconverters (version iii) I used to have the older versions and they were noticeably worse. So the latest stuff is pretty good. Even out to the edge of the photo, if it is in the focal plane, it is sharp. (at least to me) I am curious what you think?

I'll post some examples of the 600 with 2X all handheld shots (except the warbler) that are uncropped. Download them and tell me if they have a loss in quality. I think that the belief that there is a significant loss in quality comes from either poor or older gear.

Very well done! Were these shot with the 1 DX or the 5 D MK III. Shooting the same lenses but with a 7D, 7D MK II and a 5D MK II. Hope to have a new 1DX soon, the is much better now.

Being that your camera is manufactured by Canon, my advice to you is to stick with a Canon brand converter and, albeit, others will disagree with me, I have found that most Tamron products, etc, are not the quality of other non-OEM products and when it comes to lenses, Sigma lenses special lenses, such ass their art lenses seem to be best, but when it comes to non OEM converters, I would remain to opt for the Canon made converter for a Canon made camera.

All with the 1DX; most at ISO 1250 and shutter speeds of 1/1000 +/- a little; the warbler shot was on a tripod and shutter speed of 1/400

It took me a while to learn to squeeze off shots and to hold steady when handholding. I only handhold because I can't get the camera on the bird fast enough most of the time when on a tripod, even with a good Wimberly head. I'll use a monopod when I can, but again it slows me down. I don't handhold because I am "macho" but because I am in a situation where that is the only way I can get the shot.
