Welcome to our forum!

I see a TC as being a low-cost alternative to a long, expensive lens that I will not use very often. I have the Kenko 1.4 TC for Nikon, and I'm pleased with the results. A Search will find comments and posts about teleconverters.

On what lens?
The lens you plan to use it with is probably more important than knowing what camera.

The main lense I plan on using it on is the 100mm f/2.8l macro

IMO, I would not go beyond a 1.4TC, no matter how well made it is between the loss of stops and another piece of glass between the sensor and front element sharpness will suffer. I own a Kenko 1.4 TC, and it provides just enough for me.

My experience is the Canon Macro L will not AF with a 1.4X Tamron SP TC - why I cannot say ?? - of course you can manually focus - this may also be true with a 2X .

Yeah, I was tempted to get the 2.0 TC, but I think that would be pushing it.

Whether it will work or not is not as important as what you end up with for image quality - typically a 2x TC will take away 25% - 30% of your resolution and sharpness.

make sure your lens will adapt to a teleconverter, not all will. that said, the larger the teleconverter, the softer the photo and the greater the chance of needing to manually focus. 1.4 should be the largest to start with. if you have a camera store in your area, or a fellow photographer nearby, you may want to try the teleconverter on your camera and lens to get a feel for it before you lay down the cash to own one. if you are trying a teleconverter for macro, you may want to look into extension rings as an alternative.

Teleconverters work best on prime lenses, This is what you will be using it on. I use a 2x with a 100 mm macro and love it. Sorry I have no idea what rand is best. Dave

I have both the 1.4x and 2X Kenko TC, and am very pleased with the results. If you order them from B+H you got thirty days to try them out.

So you like the 2X. Maybe I'll get one and see how it works for me.

Here is a photo I took with a canon 1.4 TC as they say a picture is worth a thousand words you can decide if it is good enough for your needs.

please do not misunderstand my intent, the photo is a great shot. but, that said, the teleconverter at 1.4 has softened the photo, and if you had used a 2.0 converter, which is what the OP is looking at, it would have been much softer. the teleconverter will work fine as long as you have no need to do any major cropping afterwards and have no interest in making anything larger than a 5x7 print.
