There seems to be some negative feelings about some of the cameras that require settings be made via the menu selections. It's deemed bulky and inconvenient, preferring cameras that do the same thing with more "convenient" buttons. On the other hand, as you say, too many buttons, too easy to hit the wrong one, and all with different functions depending on whether you're using the OVF or live view, or depending on which mode you're in. To me, that is really confusing. I think sometimes it's better to select the functions you want/need within the menu and use a single button to access them. The Fn button on the A6000 provides that ability, which I found very useful. Too bad Nikon hasn't discovered that. Maybe someone there will have the light come on and offer up a firmware update that allows that.

Right. I should assign that Fn button a job. It's just sitting there going along for the ride..

Every button should have a job, I suppose. I just haven't decided what I should assign to my Fn button.

Does your camera have the U1 and U2 settings? I've never used them, but I should.

After doing more thinking about the AE-L/AF-L button, and talking to my grandson who knows more than I do, I assigned "AF-on" to the button so I don't have to rely on pressing the shutter button halfway down to focus each time.

Jerry I find these very useful settings. I use U1 for landscapes and fixed and slow moving subjects. Aperture priority base of F/8 and other landscape type settings. I use U2 for BIF set to Shutter priority with a base of 1/2000ss and other settings for fast moving subjects. Very easy to setup, set your camera to the setting you wish to save (I call them base settings), go to the Setup Menu - Save User Settings, save as U1 or U2. On my D7100 the only modes I use are U1, U2, and M. One example would be a sunset. I go to U1 - 'A' priority with the base of F/8. Change that to F/4, change other settings. Now I want to go back to my Base settings. Switch the mode off of U1 to another mode then back to U1. You will now be back to your U1 base settings. This is how I use U1 & U2 hope this helps. - Bruce

Has anyone found a way to stop that annoying change. I only want full screen images, no thumbnails and no stinking calendar.

When you are viewing FULL images and you hit the ISO/- button it takes you to calendar view. To cancel this press the QUAL/+ button.

There are four different screens in calendar view. If you press the ISO/- four times you have to press the QUAL/+ four times to get back to full view.

Important to remember that when you exit playback mode (by pressing the menu button or the shutter or the white triangle), the next time you go to playback it will come up in the same screen view you exited from.

If you're seeing the calendar view, use the plus button to get back to full screen view, then when you exit playback it will come up in full screen every time you open playback.

Ditto Jerry, have a D7200 and a D7000. Both have the U1 & U2 settings, but
I have not used them yet. Probably should start.

Thanks for that tip.

Thanks. I'll give this some thought. This is a lot like getting a tattoo. I could never get a tattoo because I could never decide what I would want to have printed on me forever. It's the same with the U1 and U2. I'm sure I'd find myself changing them every other day.

I will give it some thought, though.
