D7200 AE/AF Lock Button

I have looked through the user manual, and perhaps I just missed it, and haven't found an explanation otherwise, so I am asking you all who might know. I have been trying to assign the AE/AF lock button on the back of my D7200 and noticed two things: 1.) The manual says when the button is pressed, AEL or AFL should appear in the viewfinder or LCD panel next to the in-focus dot. I don't see that in either. 2.) When I press the AE-L/AF-L button and turn either of the command dials, the numbers 24--16 or 18---12 appear in both the viewfinder and rear LCD panel, as well as the small upper LCD panel. I am curious as to what these numbers mean. I should also add, that when I do this, numbers appear in the lower right corner of the upper LCD screen like this: [1.3] or [2.0]. Does this refer to the image area?

Never mind, I just figured it out. It's the image area setting. I just didn't know that pressing the AF/AE lock button and turning either of the command wheels would change the image area. Sorry to have bothered anyone who may have read this.

Being "bothered" with questions is why do many of us come here every day.

Well, thanks for your comment, and it's exactly why I post tech questions here. I also discovered, after reading about the "qual" button, that pressing it only maginifies the image on the rear screen, rather than displaying the "qual" info. In fact, none of the buttons except menu button do what they're suppose to. They did before. Any idea what I may have done here?

I am still learning things about this camera, and there is lots to learn.

Pressing the "qual" button on my D7200 only magnifies when I'm previewing an image on the lcd.

When not previewing an image, it brings up the image quality menu, which you can then adjust with either the rear command dial or the front sub command dial.

All other buttons bring up their respective menu.
If your D7200 is not ... you may want to do a factory reset.

Got that one figured out, too. A bit more research determined that those buttons only work when not in live view. When in live view they just magnify the image. I believe this is to facilitate manual focusing when in live mode. Nothing wrong with the camera.

The more I play around with the D7200, the more impressed with it and its capabilities. I doubt I'll use all of what it can do, but I'm glad to have all those features should I want or need them.

You wouldn't, by any chance, know if there is an accessory eyecup that is eyeglasses friendly, would you?

Can't say I've tried it because I take my glasses off to shoot, but I have the standard Hoodman eye cups on three Nikons.

as you've discovered, buttons on the camera are "overloaded"

Depending on the mode the camera is in, different things will happen.
Playback, Liveview, viewfinder all can affect what the buttons do.

Wingpilot in your manual checkout - Custom Settings Menu - F/Controls. F4 will describe all the options for the AE-L/AF-L. I set mine to AF-ON for BBF on my D7100.

These cameras are extremely sophisticated computers and just like the computers on our desks, I can't imagine that any human could utilize all of the functions built into them. We choose our cameras and our computers based on the relatively few functions that we need. Professional cameramen probably use a large percentage but casual hobby users learn relatively few. I would estimate that I use far less than 10% since I don't ever use the video and can eliminate that entire function with its capabilities.

One thing that always stumps me is viewing the images on the LCD. I will somehow hit a button or two, and the images become tiny and fill the LCD, and then it goes to calendar mode. I always have to consult the manual to find out how to get it back to one large image.

I've had that happen, too. Took me quite awhile to figure that one out. Not sure why one would want to put the images in calendar mode, anyway, since the images are too small to see any detail. Seems like a useless feature to me.
