Same goes for light motion detectors in common pathways.

I was recently in the frozen food aisle of a supermarket, and as I walked by each freezer, the inside lights turned on and then off.

Allows you to turn the room lights on and to not forget the key card when you leave the room.

I've seen recommendations to take the room key with you when you check out so people can't get info about you from the card. That seems like an overly cautious practice.

This is better than it used to be! I once stayed in a Holiday Inn in which the room had sensors. There had to be movement in the room or the air conditioner would not run. Imagine now it is 108 degrees outside. I had a south facing room. I woke at 1:30 am to find it was over 95 degrees in my room. When I checked out I refused to pay for the room. The desk clerk said they had been having many complaints on the heat issue. It ended with a free but sleepless night.

What it isn't is a discussion of photography, unless you want to talk about the picture you posted, which isn't any good.

It was supposed to be a stellar picture, just a bit of irony.

They are reeling only doing this to make sure you turn off the lights to save them money, but they will say it is to help the Environment.

That's all OK, but it wasn't part of the original post, nor anything to do with photography. Please don't assume that I don't have financial constraints either.

Your trip could also be painted as an opportunity that others can't afford, or as everyday life for the one percent. I do not think you intended that.

None of us should be making assumptions about others on a forum such as this. Mostly we have no idea about the situations of other UHH members. I do hope that you had a wonderful trip, and I'm sure that it took a lot of effort to make it happen.

I wasn't directing my comments at your good self or your family, but I have witnessed profligate waste, and I have witnessed arrogant and obtuse individuals from many countries, not least from my own, the UK.

On the other hand I agree about looking at the entire supply chain when it comes to things like hybrid or electric vehicles. It goes beyond energy consumption to the entire manufacturing, use, and recycling process. End to end economics.

There is a reason why a certain vehicle in my local area is referred to as a "Toyota Pious", and not always with a great degree of reverence.

Take care, and apologies if I caused any offense.

I inderstand your side of the coin also. America in general is viewed as a wasteful place. We can only do our parts to help out. Take it easy, I have to feed the vertically impaired. :)

This is nothing new. It's designed to save electricity. I first experienced it thirty years ago in a hotel in Singapore. Since then I've seen it frequently in Asia and Europe.

Maybe I should have said Here...

Less well-off countries have had to find ways to economize way before we did and half the time Americans aren't doing it to save anything but because of politic correctness or some other such misguided reason.

I can but we were pretty fortunate with communication. There was only one young man that couldn't grasp what we were trying to convey but it wasn't impossible, it just took a bit longer.

Honestly, part it was us trying to figure out there rail system. Some stations are like hubs where you can transferr to different areas. Some go farther like the RER lines and some go differnt directions within the city (the Metro). Some had places for bus connections, it's nuts but we had a decent handle on it by day three. We made it home so it couldn't have been too bad. :)

A few years ago my wife and I were in such a hotel. She was taking a shower and I needed to go down to the lobby gift shop and get something or other. I grabbed the card and left the room without thinking. When I returned I found her in a very bad mood: I had left her in the dark with the water running. She couldn't see the faucets, or any structure in the bathroom since there were no windows. She finally got out safely.

Since then I have either gotten a second room card (not always easy to do) or found a substitute; a credit card sometimes will work. Most of these devices do not read the strip, but are simply a switch that you need to depress somehow.

That "dumb contraption" is for good use here in the west where it also controls the AC. Can you imagine the savings of not having the AC run all day?
