Allows you to turn the room lights on and to not forget the key card when you leave the room.

Attaboy, but the necessity baffles me. We have been using hotel services for decades and have never left a key card in a room unless they wanted it that way.

It just seemed bizarre to me. It's right up there with the quandry created by hybrid cars. Yes, they get great mileage when not using fossil fuels to move them but what about all of that extra wiring and batteries that they are still unable to recycle. It kind of negates a whole bunch of the environmental friendlieness.

First time we ran into it was in Berlin. It took us a good half hour to figure out how to turn the lights on.

At least you have a good sense of humor about the whole thing. :)

No surprise there, this is about economy. By forcing the client to use the keyboard they also force an economy of energy bill as to go out, the so-called client effectively turns off all the lights.

No more 'forgotten' lights all over.

Same goes for light motion detectors in common pathways.

These are unobtrusive ways to control cost and nothing else.

As to cars and crap like that, you have not considered the full impact of these so-called green gars. They use more pollution to create, use more energy (pollution) to run and use more pollution to dispose off.

It is just an 'invisible' transfer that the public does not see. Regular cars give back about 25~30% of energy when used. Electric cars less than 15% (85% of the energy is lost when charging) then 25% more is lost due to friction, heat and who knows what else. So... a return of less than 13% on energy used compared to gas guzzling cars...

   to Tesla and other manufacturers going toward 'all electric green car'.

Well said Ron, and in a roundabout way, that was exactly my point and after all of that extra energy is used to build these more efficient vehicles, fossil fuels are still being used to support them.

That's just because energy is cheap in the USA and we waste it in a profligate manner. It's a different deal in Europe and much of the rest of the world cost wise.

It's basically a way of getting the ugly American tourist to wake up and pay attention to what is going on around them.

Leave the lights on, which requires your key card, you can't get back into your room. Want to get back into your room, you need the card and the lights go off.

It has very little to do with where the energy comes from, it's all to do with whether it gets used or not.

It's a Pavlovian thing. Works on the basis that hotel guests are no smarter than dogs, but they are trainable!

Woof!

It's an apple/orange thing Peter. I wasn't talking about anything beyond the idea that most people who buy those types of cars think they are doing the environment a favor. This is not necessarily the case for a number of reasons.

As for wasteful Americans, it is largely true but trust me when I tell you that some of us understand the value of economy. I work in a private prison and in a good year (meaning a decent amount of overtime), I still make less than 40k and my wife and I feed and house 14 people and we just returned from two weeks in Paris, Great Britain, and the Netherlands. I will leave you to do the math but economy isn't just a word around this house, it's a way of life.

What it isn't is a discussion of photography, unless you want to talk about the picture you posted, which isn't any good.

That's all OK, but it wasn't part of the original post, nor anything to do with photography. Please don't assume that I don't have financial constraints either.

Your trip could also be painted as an opportunity that others can't afford, or as everyday life for the one percent. I do not think you intended that.

None of us should be making assumptions about others on a forum such as this. Mostly we have no idea about the situations of other UHH members. I do hope that you had a wonderful trip, and I'm sure that it took a lot of effort to make it happen.

I wasn't directing my comments at your good self or your family, but I have witnessed profligate waste, and I have witnessed arrogant and obtuse individuals from many countries, not least from my own, the UK.

On the other hand I agree about looking at the entire supply chain when it comes to things like hybrid or electric vehicles. It goes beyond energy consumption to the entire manufacturing, use, and recycling process. End to end economics.

There is a reason why a certain vehicle in my local area is referred to as a "Toyota Pious", and not always with a great degree of reverence.

Take care, and apologies if I caused any offense.

Mike, no mystery to me!
Decades ago I could run faster, jump higher and leap onto my wife in a single bound!!! I'll bet there are more than just a few here now that can barely crawl up there now, let alone leap!!
So as your body and your mind go, you'll probably appreciate it more and more that the hotel is reminding you to take the key.
You may be fine this year, but next year you'll be thanking them!!
In the meantime, don't be such a snob....., your time will come!!!!!!
SS
PS, I'll bet if you stay where young people stay, like hostels, they don't have those dumb contraptions!!!
