The Canon 400mm f/5.6L lens allows me the reach to be able to take bird photos and it is available at the lower end of the long telephoto price range. I checked and this "L" quality lens is available for $1,149 today. It has performed to my satisfaction at all distances (minimum focusing distance is about 17') with all my cameras. The "L" lenses from Canon have all proven to be superior glass and they are certainly well built. The proof is in the results. Please view these shots, each taken with a different camera but all with the same lens.
Please view in DOWNLOAD mode.
Hope you all enjoy a fine spring week.

Bob, excellent photos with all the bodies. It sure does show a great L lens can take great pictures, with a person who knows how to use the equipment. Love the different set ups you used and the different subjects showing that the photographer (yourself) knows how to use the equipment.

Certainly sharp results. The 17 feet close focusing might trouble me though.

All wonderful captures Bob, love the Robin. Also the very puffed up Dove, he looks like a tea cosy! something we put on our teapots in the UK to keep the tea hot!  :D

Great shots, certainly something to be proud of. I agree Bob, one of the sharpest L's that Canon sells. I have the same lens, and it truly is amazing. I also have the 100-400 mk1 and it's a toss up which to carry...zoom or not. I generally end up with the zoom as they are about equal in pic quality and I have zoom ability and IS. I may have to divest myself of one of them though, as I have just too much stuff I don't use..

Thank you kindly, Greg! Mighty overcast here today...not very good conditions for photography!
