The Canon 400mm f/5.6L lens allows me the reach to be able to take bird photos and it is available at the lower end of the long telephoto price range. I checked and this "L" quality lens is available for $1,149 today. It has performed to my satisfaction at all distances (minimum focusing distance is about 17') with all my cameras. The "L" lenses from Canon have all proven to be superior glass and they are certainly well built. The proof is in the results. Please view these shots, each taken with a different camera but all with the same lens.

Hope you all enjoy a fine spring week.

This lens is an excellent lens Bob. But, your skill at eliminating camera shake no doubt is, the determining factor.

Thanks, Pierre! You recognize that hand shake is a problem that I struggle to eliminate. Shakiness is present in all of us but, with me, the degree seems to be proportional to my age. I find it comforting to be among others, like you, who strive to maintain sharp focus.
Glad you stopped by!

Been a while since I heard from you, Jan. Glad you came by!
Love to see some of your spectacular bird shots!

Spectacular results, Bob. Great lens and an even greater photographer!
Certainly sharp results. The 17 feet close focusing might trouble me though.

All wonderful captures Bob, love the Robin. Also the very puffed up Dove, he looks like a tea cosy! something we put on our teapots in the UK to keep the tea hot!  :D
