Scott Kelly books are outstanding with easy to follow instruction and lots of screen shots. Have fun!

Katherine (& Scott)

With no disrespect intended, I was disappointed in Scott's book on PSE 14 especially for a new user for Elements. It has very good step by step tutorials for several of the more advanced editing things we take on in PP, but I think he assumed all the readers had used Elements previously to PSE 14 so he ignored the basics.

My first introduction to Photoshop was PSE 10; I used it for several years before getting PSE 14 and Scott's book on 14. Overall, I think Barbara Brundage's "Photoshop Elements 10, the missing manual" is a much better introductory guide to Elements overall as well a tutorial for PSE 10. I don't know if she has published a missing Manual for PSE14, but the OP might check.

Another site to learn Elements 14 is http://www.essential-photoshop-elements.com/crop-photos-into-shapes.html They have lots of demonstrations.

UHH members, as I stated last month I just paid for and I am in the process of downloading and initializing Elements 14. It has to be one of the longest set-ups I have ever done. And hour (close to) accomplish I all. Now the learning experience. This will keep me off the site for awhile and I will be returning after I understand the basics.

I want to thank all the individuals who helped me decide on which way to go. I did a one time buy rather then the rent, as stated for the reasons in other posts. It is the old man in e that comes out about rentals and all.

Thanks again, Greg

You may want to take a look at the PS Elements 14 for dummies book. In my opinion it is the best "manual" you can buy.

I've used PSE's since version 8 or nine and found them to be great for most photographic needs. A friend told me that unless you're doing extensive graphics and very complicated photo editing PSE works fine.

The following sites have helped me greatly in terms of getting up to speed on using PSE and have updates for version 14

Good luck with using Elements 14

As you probably know we have two camera stores Pace and Southeastern, of the two I find Southeastern the most helpful.

Bruce, I have only been to peace and so far they have been helpful. Southeastern must be a terrific shop and I am looking forward to Monday AM. Will be there when they open. Thanks again for the tip. They currently have nothing scheduled and so far I am struggling but getting some comfort with E14. I am really only at the very tip of the iceberg.

Another thing to think of is joining one of the local camera clubs. Capital City Camera Club meets at JC Raulston Arboretum and Bass Lake Camera Club meets at Bass Lakes in Holly Springs. Both these camera clubs have members that would be glad to share their knowledge with you.

I have thought of joining a club but at the present I need to stay at home as much as possible. I am sending you a PM.

I have been using Photoshop CS 5 for years and only recently went to Photoshop Elements 14 as some of the plugins I use would no longer function with CS% as they were upgraded.

There is definitely a learning curve for PSE14. Like some other comments, I have found jumping in and working on a photo was helpful. After some time, I went online to read some articles and watch some videos. Like anything, learning is not once and done.

Daniel, I am playing with it and trying to follow U-Tube video and getting to do some modifications. I am actually starting over to attempt ingraining the steps into my grey matter. I definitely going to get a book on it. The video series I am following actually deals with PSE 12. The person who did the video is great at explaining the functions but since I started the videos after I had already loaded the photos, some of the video made no sense. I will take some photos today to start over with the transfer, etc. Also decided to stay with JPG just because it will make it simpler. I used to do this for a living and because of that I really view it more as a task rather than fun. Need to change my mindset also. Have a great day and thanks for caring.

I will give it a look. The "for dummy" books are pretty lame. I see you live where my parents lived and just North a tad from where I grew up. Born in Toledo, raised in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Similar history.

Looked a little longer at your signature and avatar. Thank you for either being an LEO or a retired LEO. I always take my hat off to you and your fellow LEOs. I also chase down and thank any one in the military and fire fighters. These 3 groups of individuals made and keep this country free.

Thanks for the title of a good book.

  I agree; I would have said "very good", and one big advantage is that Barbara doesn't start out assuming you have lots of prior experience with any particular PS or PSE. She walks you through it from the beginning of each procedure, and unlike Scott Kelby's new PSE 14 book, when the Missing Manual shows a screen shot; it is big enough to see and read without a magnifying glass.

I went from PSE 10 to PSE 14 with out any real problem so I don't think anyone who has mastered PSE12 will have a one--just have to get used to things (tool icons) being in different locations on the screen.

This is my first use of any Adobe software associated with digital photography. So I wish I knew 10 or 12 but I am instead starting with a clean slate. Will pick it up hopefully in the morning.

Thanks for reinforcing the use of this particular author.

Greg, I couldn't find the book locally so I ordered it from Amazon. They now have distribution warehouses in MD & DE, not sure about the Carolina's, but the delivery should be pretty quick if they have it in stock. Remember that none of the Adobe stuff is intuitive, especially the names of tools, ie. "Clone doesn't really copy" and the "Eraser" doesn't erase. If you have had experience with Picassa or some of the earlier PP tools, it should go fine.

If you get stuck post questions here and in the PP forum; the new co-administrator is a long time PSE user.
