Canon sx50 is a great little camera with a viewfinder...can take macro and long zoom shots...also shoots HD video. All your husband will have to do is use a couple of buttons on Auto...the shutter release and the video button...but the camera has many options.

I would think a simple point & shot style camera would do.
Camera bag, batteries and enough memory card(s) to take several hundred images.

Is there going to be someone assigned to him?
That would be a good person to help make sure he gets plenty of images of everything including him.

Others will jump in soon.
Pat

And, welcome to the form!!!

Another idea, make up a few cards to pass out that include his name and email and maybe other guests will share their images with him.

I agree. Make sure it has a built in flash and make sure that he knows to turn it on in shade or if shooting toward the sun.

Hello. I am 83 ,was treated to an Honor Flight last April and my son was along as "guardian". It was an amazing experience. Nothing quite compares to visiting the National Mall, the memorials and Arlington with a group of veterans. It will be a busy day including a lot of loading and unloading from the busses so it can get awkward carrying extra gear. I got a lot of good pictures with my iPhone and, as a nice touch we were all given disposable cameras. Those pictures turned out very well and the disposable was easily carried and operated. I would be happy to discuss this with you if you would like. Hope your trip is the best!

I would go with any of the bridge cameras, if for no other reason than the zoom capability. Easy to use and learn. Trust me, when outdoors and visiting the Mall, most of the shots taken will be using zoom.

And .. based on his age, I am assuming he is a Korean Vet -- the forgotten war. God bless him, I am sure he went through hell to defend our freedom.

Good Morning all my camera Angels. Shopping trip was a success. At the moment I have a CANON EOS REBEL T5 sitting on the kitchen table. I was hoping over night it would just put it self together but alas it is still in pieces with the paper headlined READ THIS FIRST EASY AS 1 2 3 blinking at me like a road side reader board.. !!!!!!!!!!!! Or better yet you would all just appear around the table and walk me though the process. Who ever thought up that title must have had to much morning coffee. But alas I will try. This camera was not on the list of the suggested ones to look at But Dave liked it so what more can I say. He is the one who has to use it. I hope you all are not leaving town for a few weeks as I am sure there will me many more questions. ALL help will be very nice. Thank you again.

Yes I do mean SOS. I am a newbaby to this special web site . My husband is going to Washington DC on the Veteran Honor flight to view the War Memorials. He is 81 and will be in a wheel chair. My question to all you knowledgeable camera people what type of camera would be best for him. I want the pictures to turn out very good for him as this is a once in a life time trip. He leaves in April so I am up against a time frame to buy and teach him all about a camera. Thank you in advance for any help you can give to me.

Any decent camera will be able to do the job, but it needs to be one that he can use comfortably, and that will take some familiarity and practice. My best advice is talk to him and understand his desires, then go out with him to help him choose, and then help him learn how to use it. It is really about the relationship between between him, the camera and you rather than the technology.

That advice is based upon my relationship with my 88 year old mother in law (my favorite party animal) and providing computer support for her (including photos and printing and editing things) that she does for herself.

Also her big brother, who turned 90 last July, went on one of those same trips a year or so back. He wasn't in a wheel chair and carried his own bags, but hey, he did survive getting wounded at Iwo Jima. These seem to be very emotional reunions for people, and quite significant so the record is important.

Attached is a snap of my mother-in-law dancing with a retired General at my uncle-in-laws 90th birthday bash, and one of my uncle-in-law! Not great photographs, but sort of capture some of the atmosphere which was my intent.

Good luck, I hope it goes very well.

The T5 is a good basic camera, and if he liked it, that is the most important thing. I use a T3i, which is similar in many regards. If I can help please feel free to PM me, and if a phone call would help I would be happy to do that.

Good luck.
