Lover you are missing the point. A snap shot is a snap shot no matter what gear you use and how big you print it - it will never be displayed in a gallery. A great shot from a capable photographer will look great even it is printed small. Although if you google it you will see how big some iPhone pictures have been printed

A case in point is Capa. Some of his most storied shots were all crapy and blurry. By many people's standards here, those shots would be little more than snapshots. But some of those shots don't speak a 1000 words......, they tell a 1000 stories!!!
Any phone would have been better!!!!

There is no doubt that smartphones will continue to improve in photo and video capability and increasingly satisfy the needs of consumers and some professional requirements. However, this article caught my attention:

Firstly, I'd like to see a photographer provide an assessment rather than a tech analyst, and secondly, define "DSLR quality" in this context!
There is no doubt that smartphones will continue t... (show quote)

Interesting article in Macworld.... you just KNEW that Apple was going in this direction; I have been looking for the ICam for a while now. I am sure all smart phone manufacturers are doing similar research. NO, they are not replacing DSLR's, and NO they will not impact the sale of film cameras. What they WILL do is get better and better and be a viable option for a lot of enthusiastic consumers and maybe others....

I agree. When I saw the phrase "DSLR quality" without any clarification of the term my reaction was that the author didn't know what he was talking about. However, if and when the tech actually hits the streets we'll probably have an opportunity to find out.

You don't need to ask Al Gore, just ask ANYBODY here. They all like to make predictions. Every guy here poses two giant crystal balls!!!!
In fact, I predict that no one can predict it!!!

Did I? Perhaps you should restate your point more comprehensibly so that we can avoid misunderstanding.

I don't really see the connection between your comment and the OP's original observation, which wasn't really a question, just making us aware of a rather shallow article. Perhaps I'm having a slow day! :D

So am I.

No worries, I'm getting distracted by my day job stuff, and my brain gets somewhat entangled when I'm trying to comprehend quantum computing. What's a poor cat to do? It gets confusing trying to be in so many states at once! :-D :-D

I can see the Pro cameras reducing in number and maybe stagnating a little. Certainly becoming more expensive and exclusive. Semi - pro will probably become phased out. But the lower end cameras will be the place for most changes. Photography has become such a mass market since PC's are in nearly every household. The idea of self processing 'free' images has exploded the 'Art of photography' into the realm of commonplace. Films produced using DSLR's, Multi million pounds spent on training,Photography holidays,Books and articles have all allowed people to think that they can 'do for themselves' everything that Pro-Photographer's did in the 1990's. (Sometimes even better and certainly in different ways - video weddings etc).Even the Print industry and Television now use 3rd rate images trawled from or given free from the internet.
And then there will be the next 'breakthrough' truly 3D and holographic images for home-users. Putting familiar faces into movies and computer games, better computer enhancements and easier post processing - if at all.
The mass market will determine how Photography is determined and the 'Retro' use of the old kit will struggle through to return like Vinyl records. Back at inflated prices and re marketed as niche and 'Arty'.
Watch TV - our films are no longer made photographically. One or two more breakthroughs in how we use our computers and tv's will determine the fate of the camera.
But not in my lifetime though, I like my hobby and hopefully my kit will see me out.

Why the low esteem?

Boy, ain't that the truth, and old Nikon items are really collectable. I think it's why so many have a tendency to keep hoarding all that old manual Nikon glass.
Probably my most expensive lens, value-wise, is an old crappy little Nikon lens and I routinely see them, at least at asking price, between $3500 and $4000. I paid a couple dollars for the little junker!!!
