I do not have any good Nikon repair experience. I just dropped the 7100 from the table on the floor - including a Tamron 16-300. Camera is still perfect and the lens too.

But it is good to hear about the repairs ...just in case.

A little over a week ago my wife dropped her backpack onto my D810. The camera functioned well enough, but in the process she broke the top LCD window. I contacted Nikon and they provided me with the place to send it to for an estimate.

In this week and a half since posting it to the service center I received the estimate, approved the service and I have the camera already back as good as new. They serviced the repair, installed firmware updates, cleaned and tested meter and sensors, and the camera looks almost like a brand new body.

I have owned Nikon since the mid 70's. I have only had a couple of occasions to use their service. One other time I sent in my D600 for them to check about the oil spotting. They confirmed it and sent me a brand new D610 which I am still using a couple of years later. I never even requested a new camera at the time.

This post isn't intended to put down other manufacturers. I am sure the others do their best as well. I am just pleased they have been very fast with their service. A week-and-a-half from my door to theirs and back.

Like you I started using Nikon in the 70's also. I have never been one to baby them (working as a journalist). I have drop them many times and they just keep on working. I like you don't mean to demean any other brands. My investment in lenses keeps me from looking at other brands but, I have absolutely no reason to consider them either.

Nikon took 3 weeks to replace the pins in the compact flash slot on a D800E. I was not impressed.

it is interesting to see the changes in expectation for repair of image making devices. with film cameras the standard was 30 days, and none of us pros ever complained about the time - then again, we never had to resend the cameras once received.

this is probably a societal change reflecting the "gotta have it now" which instant imaging has brought about.

I have had similarly great service from Nikon.
And I should add, Canon as well.
