Here's an interesting video comparing the top 4 mirrorless camera's auto-focusing systems. I forget about the Panasonic GH4 too often. I considered it a one point but it was more expensive than the Sony A6000 and less popular. However the difference in popularity is probably entirely based on the difference in price because it is clearly an incredible camera and arguably the best in the mirrorless category.

Keep in mind with that since that video, there have been a few firmware updates, making those cameras even better (or at least the em1 would be with firmware version 4.1). I think that video may have been taken around firmware 1 or 2.

I don't think I can say this often enough when it comes to shooting BIF or sports. The Sony mirrorless cameras are incredibly fast and Sony claims that the new A6100 has the fastest auto-focusing system available on any camera, anywhere.

Yes, and I can't say this often enough either but I'm sure the Samsung could run faster and jump further also!! But it suffered the same ailments, NO LENSES, and has already gone the way of the Dodo.
And before you start to tell me all about the great pro lenses Sony makes, just note that Pros and advanced amateurs don't want to pick from 12 lenses. They want to pick from 100 lenses.
Who wants to think about a second body or finding the right adapter just so you can use a special lens, like a t/s or a 200/400 or a 200 1.8 or ANY 1.2?!?!
I realize that 90% of shooters are landscapers and can get by with a couple of lenses. But not everybody wants to be, or even can be that limited! ;-)

Thank you for passing along your knowledge about the 150-500mm Sigma that may work well for my a7R II with the adapter.

I have already asked them to reserve for me the Canon 400mm f/5.6 prime, but i'm not hopeful that it will work on that lens. I will also rent the Sigma 150-500 and will check back and tell you how well it works.

I find the (Canon EF mount) Sigma 150-500 zoom w/ Metabones IV adapter on the A7R II has pretty reasonable autofocus speed. You might rent one and give it a try.

I notice that Sigma has released their own adapter for Sony A7 cameras. It might even be better?

I've used a Kenko 1.4x teleconverter w/ Canon EF lenses and adapter on both the A7 II and A7R II; works quite nicely. I've also tried the Kenko 2x teleconverter as well but the autofocus is a little shaky.

Yeah I bought a fujifilm. Took excellent photos but focus is slow compared to my Canon DSLR. So sold it. I am 75, I can still carry the heavier camera!

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, especially since I'm looking to rid myself of weight and my 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 gets heavier every week.

If the mirrorless sensor is FF, or APS-C, the mirrorless sensor, and thus the the lenses, would be the same size as their DSLR equivalents. However, with M4/3, the sensors, and thus the lenses, are much smaller and lighter.

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my inquiry.
I have benefitted greatly from your willingness to share your knowledge and experience
When I first asked about this I had no idea about these cameras and no idea what to look for or what to ask. I didn't even know there was a difference between mirrorless and micro four thirds. I thought all mirrorless cameras were micro four thirds.
I can not overstate how much you all have helped and educated me, or how much I appreciate what you have done.

I bought a mirrorless a couple of years back with the intention of sacking all my dslr equipment and using just the mirrorless.

I tried the mirrorless extensively for a few weeks however it didn't do what I wanted it to so I went back to the dslr (thank god I didn't get rid of anything) and gave the mirrorless to my wife to use. My wife got rid of the mirrorless within a week or so of me giving it to her, so the whole exercise was a complete failure.

I am going to stick to the DSLR from now on and never bother trying a mirrorless again.

Which model...there's been a lot of changes in two years.

It also goes the other way...I picked up a canon 5d3 the other day...needless to say I'm happy I don't lug around a brick anymore.

What camera are you talking about? People act like mirrorless cameras are all the same with the same features and performance. I'd love to know exactly which mirrorless camera you had that wouldn't "do what you wanted."

Thank YOU, Mac, for your post about switching to mirrorless and if we thought the switch was a good one or not.

Your topic was my favorite and i learned from what others said.

My DSLR investment was under $1500.00. Some have over 10 times that much invested and, you know, that kind of money has a way of forcing us to never change. Like being held hostage by our equipment, so to speak, because we just can't seem to be wasteful, no matter how much we want something new.

What all of this has me wondering about now is that some of us think the Sony auto focus is the best, but I get fewer good, in focus, shots with the Sony and morel with the Canon. I still don't know if it's because I'm newer than others or not but soon i will know better with experience.

Thanks, again Mac for that thoughtful post.

Then personally I'd skip the GH4.

You can aways make the EM1 larger by adding the HLD-7...or, my preference, the RSS BOEM-1 camera plate.

I totally agree..The battery grip makes the e-m1 taller than my Nikon d810, and quite a bit heavier. The RRS L plate fits perfectly and gives just the right amount of extra heft, and size.

Plus, you can remove the "L" portion and leave the base on, when not using the tripod. I've had RRS plates on several cameras, and this is the first one that doesn't get in the way when shooting hand-held, but actually enhances the experience.

Anyone looking for an HLD-7?

I don't know what is happening with your camera nor do I know which model it is but it's for sure that Sony is arguably leading the pack in auto-focus performance these days. Maybe your software needs updated but even the early version was good on auto-focus. In the meantime I urge you to download a PDF file by Sony entitled Sony 6000 4D Focus which explains in detail how most if not all of the focusing systems work on the newer Sony cameras. If that doesn't get you to where you want to be I'd send your camera back to the factory to see if it is working properly.
