This is just the risk you take buying from unknown sources. I suggest B&H, Adoroma and KEH for used gear. All are reliable. Best of luck solving your problem.

I recently bought a used lens on Ebay; Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 OS, for what I thought was a good price: $750. The seller said that the lens was in great condition and fully functional. The lens arrived and looks brand new. I put it on my 5D to photograph birds in my back yard. It would not auto focus. I put it on my 50D and it would not auto focus. I have two Tamron lenses which I switched between the two boxes and had no problem. I cleaned the contacts on the Sigma lens and both cameras and had no auto focus. I am now in the process of trying to return it. This is disappointing, as I have bought used lenses on Ebay before and have had no problems.

Pay close attention to the return policies at eBay and Paypal (assuming you paid using Paypal). They both guarantee transactions but both have a time limit; it used to be 45 days to make a claim, but that is old information so check for yourself.

I've bought and sold hundreds of items on ebay, and I think I returned two for refunds. Not defective. I just didn't like them. No problem at all.

Jumping to conclusions here, I bet the seller had this lens sitting around and realized he wasn't using it, so he put it on ebay. I doubt he discovered it was broken and decided to sell it.

The Sigma 70-200mm is normally a very good lens. I see why you bought it in the first place.

One question and I sorry if it is an abvious but you did turn the focus and vibration on didn't you?

The first day I got my Sigma the switches were the last thing I thought sbout.

Didn't PayPal cut the claim time recently. To like maybe 30 minutes.

I wouldn't blame EBay too much. There is a problem with comparability with older third party lenses. It's not their fault either. Nikon and Canon do not make their hard/firmware details public. Nor would I if in their shoes. Third party lenses makers must backward engineer form, fit and function. They do it pretty well for camera bodies that exist while they are doing it. BUT new camera bodies may have improvements that are no longer compatible with existing third party lenses even though they are backward compatible with the manufacturers own lenses.

Ken Rockwell mentions this somewhere. You will probably get good use from a brand new latest edition third party lens -- for a while. When upgrade to the latest greatest new body thing my change.

Ebay's policy provides you with protection. Have you contacted the seller? I think that is the first step you should take. If that does not provide satisfaction - contact eBay directly.

I'm dubious about buying used electronic/optical gear from an unknown seller. If I were buying such I'd buy from known sellers like KEH or several others I've dealt with.

Thanks for your good responses and advice. I did contact the seller and he e-mailed me back calling me an a--hole and saying he was a liar. I have to go through Ebay or PayPal because he refused to give a refund. I have bought and sold many times on Ebay and this is the first time I have ever had a situation like this. This may be my last purchase from that site. It's just not worth all that. I will get this resolved.

I guess you've learned the hard way what I and many others have been saying for a long time. Ebay has become a scam dumping ground so I never buy anything through them.
Best of luck in solving your problem.

As a loyal ebay user I will respectfully disagree with your statement, If you follow a few simple rules you will do fine. Buy only from 100 percent positive sellers, buy only mint in the box and get a 30 day return. I sell on eBay and I am honest and diligent in every aspect of my activities.

I think it is not enough just to tell disappointments with eBay - the sellers ID to the extent you can know it. Exposing cheaters helps us all.

BINGO!!!

What those grump grouches who disagree with the concept of folks airing their complaints in this forum, understand that a community of fellow photographers... some of whom that utilize the services of ebay.... is ABSOLUTELY appropriate and the RIGHT thing to do.

Those of you who don't understand that should re-consider with this concept in mind. ;)

^^^THIS is why robrory SHOULD have started this thread.

The only thing missing is the sellers name so we can avoid that scam artist. :x

That's an unfounded generalization. Don't mean to directly criticize you. I've had numerous successful transactions, as seller and buyer, on eBay. I know of many others who have had similar experiences. It is important to be familiar with a few of the pitfalls.
