You are looking at it from the viewpoint of a professional, where justifying an expenditure is often a necessity. For those of us for whom photography is a hobby the criteria is a bit different. We don't have to have a need for a purchase, only a desire. Our purchases don't have to make sense to anyone but ourselves. I've been considering getting another prime. Do I need it or have a specific purpose in mind? Nope. Do I want it? Possibly. When I make up my mind I might get it or not, but that won't affect anyone but me. Then there's the 5D MkIV rumored to be coming out this fall........ :-D
As I've stated before: If it's a hobby, the rule of reason need not apply!

Nothing is wrong with satisfying a GAS pain now and then, if the purchase makes you feel better. I HAVE known some pretty big spenders to spend a lot of money on things they never used, however.

The saddest thing in the world is to hear a widow say her husband spent $6000 on photo gear and only "used" it once — and gave up after that, because he realized he would "have to read the friggin' manual to figure it out!"

well yes its true I really did buy the D810 today.
It wasn't, hey I think I'll buy a camera. Ive been looking and looking and reading and holding and touching and reading everything here on UHH for a year.
Today was the day I pulled the trigger.

as for education, yea I've been there done that, and am currently in an advanced class. I haven't learned much so far I know most of whats being taught.

Now as for the camera. The old camera was a d5200.
Good camera , I like it, but even with good glass
it does not give me the tack sharp images that I see from the 810. Yes it was on a tripod, yes VR was turned off, yes the mirror was up, yes the glass was clean, yes I used a wired remote.... so its too late now its ordered, but I do have a 14 days to return it for a full refund, just in case I want a d5

You only live once ...... though Ian Fleming disagrees.

True, those things happen from time to time and it is a shame to see money wasted in those cases. Just the same, how does that make it the business of anyone on here to try to tell someone else how to spend their money?

Yup GAS has struck, talked about the gas pains to the better half
and she said I should see if I could find something to ease my pain. she handed me $400.00 saying this should help.
So I just ordered a D810 ,
Because I have 90 days to spend $500. on my new credit card, and get $100. Bonus
Then I also get 2% cash back of the total spent ( today only)
Im saving a few bucks.

so now I need cards and extra battery's a lens or two...
Oh wait I cant afford all that, maybe I had better cancel my order...

It doesn't, and it isn't. Just a precautionary nudge to the subconscious of those who act before they think...

We've all bought stuff we didn't need, would not use, or that didn't fit its intended purpose. I kick the crap outta myself every time I do that!

As I get older, GAS is a constant problem (both kinds).

I had a SLR 60 years ago and up to the '90's. I took a few pictures with it occasionally. Then I got a P&S. Cost $500. 1.2MBytes. Did pretty well but I missed the SLR. A friend had a D70 which looked pretty good so I thought about getting one. But then the D200 came out so I got one of them instead. After a couple years I was chafing at the limitations of the D200 so I got a D3. A real pain in the wallet (had to get new lenses also for FX) but it was a whole new world.

After a few years the D3 disappeared from my truck. Insurance covered some of it (minus deductable and depreciation) so I got a D4. Not so much a whole new world, but a significant improvement.

So now the D5 is coming out. You think YOU have GAS?

I have a garage full of good quality woodworking tools that, hopefully, I will get around to using before I die. If not, my wife is going to have a heck of a yard sale! Seems that my cameras or carpenter's tools always get used first and all I can do is look at those router bits and dado blades and dream of what could be!

I couldn't have said it any better! I readily admit that I'm a gear head. I take pictures and I make frames, and if I want (not necessarily need) a new piece of equipment I buy it. I love retirement!!!!

I'm always amazed at the GAS issues stated on this site. Every piece of equipment I purchased was purchased for a specific purpose. A photo job required, and not a manufactured requirement, something i didn't own at the time. So, I'd borrow the money for the purchase, do the job, and then pay off the loan.

Yup, sometimes my net gain was only the equipment, but then I could use that equipment again and again, even to this day. So, it was decided by need, not want. Just because some photographic equipment manufacturer craps out some new item, doesn't mean everyone has to run out and buy it. Though, they'd love it if you did.

Ask yourself what is that going to do that I can't do already and do I really need to do whatever that is. You'll find that relieves a lot of GAS and reduces stress on the bank account.

Outside of a supply of 4x5 and 120 film, I've not purchased any photographic related equipment for months. Nor have I had the desire to do so. I do have an uncontrollable desire to go out and use what I have, though.

Your self control and dedication to the basic precepts of economics are a shining inspiration and a goal toward which we should all strive. You have my undying admiration. (Emoticon deleted)

With the D5200 did you check to see if the camera and lens combination was back focusing or front focusing? That can make a difference. Did you use the .jpeg files out of the camera? Nikon sets the default sharpening for the Picture Controls - Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome very low at level 3. Nikon expert, Ken Rockwell, recommends going through all of the Picture Controls and increasing the sharpening to level 6.

A person can rationaize anything to fit what they want an outcome to be. Retailers wouldn't want it any other way.

What good is money in the bank if you can't spend it on something you enjoy ?
