Yup GAS has struck, talked about the gas pains to the better half
and she said I should see if I could find something to ease my pain. she handed me $400.00 saying this should help.
So I just ordered a D810 ,
Because I have 90 days to spend $500. on my new credit card, and get $100. Bonus
Then I also get 2% cash back of the total spent ( today only)
Im saving a few bucks.

so now I need cards and extra battery's a lens or two...
Oh wait I cant afford all that, maybe I had better cancel my order...

Impulse buys often turn out to be the most regrettable ones.

I'm always amazed at the GAS issues stated on this site. Every piece of equipment I purchased was purchased for a specific purpose. A photo job required, and not a manufactured requirement, something i didn't own at the time. So, I'd borrow the money for the purchase, do the job, and then pay off the loan.

Yup, sometimes my net gain was only the equipment, but then I could use that equipment again and again, even to this day. So, it was decided by need, not want. Just because some photographic equipment manufacturer craps out some new item, doesn't mean everyone has to run out and buy it. Though, they'd love it if you did.

Ask yourself what is that going to do that I can't do already and do I really need to do whatever that is. You'll find that relieves a lot of GAS and reduces stress on the bank account.

Outside of a supply of 4x5 and 120 film, I've not purchased any photographic related equipment for months. Nor have I had the desire to do so. I do have an uncontrollable desire to go out and use what I have, though.

I always laugh when people think they are saving money by spending money... Gotta love advertisers! Insert your own quote from PT Barnum here.

... this cloud of gas has the aroma of tongue-in-cheek- humor. At least, that's what it smells like to me.

Why does GAS happen; is the UHH at fault. Well, think. You come back from that idyllic place and review you pictures, those sad little images in the viewer. Then you see those phenomenal, stupendest, creative, beautiful images that Joe got with his (name withheld) lens. Your eyes go wide and those pangs grow, it is a matter of staying upright and breathing - GAS squared.

If you already have a reasonably capable camera, I would venture to say that $500 spent on photo education could yield far greater marginal returns than would a new camera.

It seems to me you've made perfectly logical decisions. When you take into account the money you've saved by turning to UHH for advice rather than going to some pricey "camera counselor," I'd say you probably have generated the income you need for a good macro lens. As for the resident wet blankets, they're probably on your wife's payroll, so bypassing their advice earns you more available cash. I'm betting you need a good polarizing filter...

well yes its true I really did buy the D810 today.
It wasn't, hey I think I'll buy a camera. Ive been looking and looking and reading and holding and touching and reading everything here on UHH for a year.
Today was the day I pulled the trigger.

as for education, yea I've been there done that, and am currently in an advanced class. I haven't learned much so far I know most of whats being taught.

Now as for the camera. The old camera was a d5200.
Good camera , I like it, but even with good glass
it does not give me the tack sharp images that I see from the 810. Yes it was on a tripod, yes VR was turned off, yes the mirror was up, yes the glass was clean, yes I used a wired remote.... so its too late now its ordered, but I do have a 14 days to return it for a full refund, just in case I want a d5

Given used copies of a D810 are priced in the neighborhood of $2500, I'm not really understanding a $500 price ....

I had to spend at least $500 to get the $100 bonus , which has nothing to do with the cost of the camera. its just $100.00 I saved....

You are looking at it from the viewpoint of a professional, where justifying an expenditure is often a necessity. For those of us for whom photography is a hobby the criteria is a bit different. We don't have to have a need for a purchase, only a desire. Our purchases don't have to make sense to anyone but ourselves. I've been considering getting another prime. Do I need it or have a specific purpose in mind? Nope. Do I want it? Possibly. When I make up my mind I might get it or not, but that won't affect anyone but me. Then there's the 5D MkIV rumored to be coming out this fall........ :-D
As I've stated before: If it's a hobby, the rule of reason need not apply!
