I am stumped. The auto bracketing and HDR are greyed out on my Nikon. The help says that my settings will not allow the use of those functions. I've tried everything that I can think of to get their function back to no avail. Can anyone out there offer me some advice?
Thanks
Paul

You didn't mention what Nikon. A door should have two buttons with green dot on or next to them. Holding them for a few seconds will bring most things back to factory defaults. That would be a good place to start.

It is easier to reset what you want, than try to remember all the settings you've changed.

Edit - just saw the model in the title ... look for the green dots.

Go to Nikon and look for the PDF of the manual if you don't have the booklet. The reset usually involves two buttons, many Nikons have a green dot next to each of them. You press and hold in on both buttons for about 2 seconds while the camera is on and it will take it back to factory settings. When I've done this on my D5200 and D7200, some info is retained, like copyright info and date and time. All of your custom settings will be wiped and you can start over. Also, try the bracketing while in Aperture Priority mode, it works best for most folks there. You may be in a mode that doesn't allow for bracketing. Good luck!

You say in a later post you have a d5100, correct?
Is there a chance you have the mode dial set to Auto? When my d5100 is on Auto mode neither auto bracketing or HDR are available.

where is your dial set, if it is in automatic mode, the bracketing will not work, needs to be set at the very least on P(program) mode.

Here's my WAG x 2:

First HDR & auto bracket seem to only work in P, S, A & M modes.

And, HDR & auto bracket do not work with the camera in intervalometer mode.

That's what I found from a very quick scan of the PDF version of the 5100 instruction book.

Good luck!

Did I say behind doors?

It is the menu and information buttons.

You will have to browse all the way to page 3 of your manual to find it.

I just checked, on a D7100, the Bkt button (left side of camera body below Flash Options, and the control is available in P, S, A and M but not in Full Auto mode.

HDR and Bracketing will only work in Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Program mode. All other modes, it will not work.
In addition, HDR mode will not work if shooting in RAW.

I have been trying get them functioning in the "A", "P" and "M" modes. I do see green dots by the "I" information and the "Menu" buttons. Are those the the reset buttons that you are talking about?

Also note that if you have HDR turned on, Bracketing does not work and vice versa.
