If you already have a camera, cut out an opening in a zip lock bag, place the camera inside and screw a protective filter on the lens trapping some of the bag around the opening. Use the $500 to upgrade your accommodation on the cruise.
Is your advice intended for the OP to use such a "configured" camera in or on the surface of the water? How easy is it to get an optical filter to remain secured to a lens' screw threads with Ziploc plastic in between? How many times have you done this and obtained a true seal? None, I bet.
IF you're answer is NONE AND you do intend this to be used in or on the water's surface, THEN I'm sorry, but I'd have to conclude that you are either an idiot and a jerk OR a downright $&@#£<¥£ for suggesting this. If you've done this yourself and succeeded with a minimum number of attempts, go publish it.
Do you like Ford or GM cars?
Most of the major mfg's offer something of interest to you and everybody will chime in as to their favorite.
You should just go to a camera store or BestBuy and compare things. (Ask about price matching too.)

The above is good advice but ultimately you will have to decide what feature(s) are most important and go with that so maybe a list is order.
As has been stated, most manufactures will have something for you and given the very generous budget for p&s, I would be more inclined to buy a waterproof housing for my dlsr but compact cameras are much more comvenient.
Good luck with your search.
You may also wish to consider a floating camera strap.
Thanks everyone for your feedback, sounds like the Olympus TG4 is the way to go.
Only using the camera at the beach and for some snorkelling maybe 3-5 feet under water.
Just put my order in at B&H
I believe the Olympus and the new Leica are the only waterproof P/S that have RAW option.
100% great choice
Olympus tough ! It's the one to go with !
The Olympus TG4 was the first choice of the white water rafting guides.I have the nicon aw100 and I like it a lot.it has been on many w/w rafting trips and skiing trips an have never had a problem with it. I think the only diff. between the AW120 an the AW100 is the newer one has WIFI .

I know the OP has already ordered a camera- congrats! I'm sure it will be awesome.
But just a side note for anyone else looking for a waterproof camera. I guess I had the Nikon AW120 because it had Wifi - and out of all my wifi cameras this one worked the best and was super easy to use. So if you like Wifi - go with the Nikon.

In my opinion, it is nice to get an idea of what others think about different brands/models before I go into a store. Best Buy personnel do not know diddly squat about the cameras.
