Yellow-rumped Warbler. Nice shots! This type of bird for many can be just a winter bird. Seeing where you are located it probably is since you are on the West Coast. I just looked online and there is a Birds of California by Stan Tekeila book. If you do not have it that is the best book you can have for quickly being able to ID what you are seeing when you don't know what something is while they are still there in the yard or even after they have flown away and are still fresh in your mind.

The AW in my bird book looked the most like this bird, but I wasn't sure. There are more Warblers than I realized. Eliminating some by regional habitats helps to some degree.

Thanks for taking time to glance at these and for your thoughts on ID.

Vicky, I struggle constantly with bird IDs. Just the other night, my brother (another birder) and I had a disagreement over what variety of Sandpiper was in my last post. I said Red Knot, he said Dunlin. I changed my description just to keep peace in the family.

I saw this bird flitting quickly from branch to branch the other day. I had the Canon 100-400L mounted on the 7D and got a couple of shots with that combination, resting the lens on a fence post. These shots aren't as sharp as I'd like, but maybe someone can ID the bird from them.

I just love yellow rumped warblers, or butter butts as some people call them...love your shots of them. last year we had so many of them around the suet feeders, but this year I've only seen a couple.

I believe what you have is an Audubon's Warbler because of the yellow on the throat and the crown of the head.

Audubon's Warbler is now considered a race of the Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Yes, Mike I know that.

However, while an Audubon's Warbler is a Yellow-Rumped Warbler, a Yellow-Rumped Warbler may not be an Audubon's Warbler.

In the interest of accuracy, let's call it what it is.
