Hi,
I'm looking for a good wide angle lense for a Canon 7D. Any recommendations?
Thanks

I use the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8, it is an awesome lens.
It's ratings are as good as the Canon 16-35mm

One of the things we haven't asked the OP yet is how wide is required?

The D800E is a full frame camera, the 7D is APS-C, so the Tokina 16-28mm would have the equivalent FOV of 24 - 42mm which is only moderately wide in 35mm terms.

Nice lens or otherwise, we don't yet know what is desired....

Clarification question. Are you saying that this is an EF mount lens that works from 12 -28mm on an APS-C camera (7D for example), but will also mount without problems on an ESO FF frame (or other vendors such as Sony) but will vignette below 18mm?

Or did you mean something else? Thx.

The official l designation from Tokina is it is a "DX" lens but KR gives some good insights into what it can do here - http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/12-28mm.htm

KR talks about the Nikon version. My assumption is there are no "problems" with using the Canon version on FF.

Boy the last few post are disseminating some misinformation. Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 is a FF lens, I own one use it one my 6D. I guess it could be used on EFS but why would I want too when I have a 15-85. Tokina 12-28 f4 is a APS-C lens as per Maker. Why would I want to use it on FF with issues of covering sensor. To use a Canon EF/EOS lens on Sony I need an adapter. Using Nikon speak FX/DX on other than designed for application can be problematic. Not saying you have not done it it work - But!

Because, maybe you have plans of shooting with BOTH crop and FF in the future ! Covers FF from 18mm up ! 20mm is wide enough for me on FF ! SOME people like saving money ! - and not carrying more lenses than necessary !

So, I think I am getting this discussion, but am asking questions to potentially reduce confusion for some of us.

It sounds like the lens in question is a decent lens, and will work without physical problems on various cameras, but there will be limitations on full frame cameras. If one understands those limitations, that is fine, but if not it sounds potentially confusing.

It feels as though a little more rational and objective description could be beneficial...

I hoped that was what I was suggesting. If we go to the makers site we can see from them directly. It's like my 10-22 I could have done some stuff to make it work on FF but it just comes up a bit short. I am not saying they don't but they don't work as well as a designed for lens.

I believe that that is rational and objective and accurate. I have used most of the lenses and used them when they were improperly used. That is call field testing and my experience.

To me rather like saying buy a Nikon 12-24 and a Canon adapter then if you ever buy a Nikon you will have the proper lens.

While it works great on full-frame, I wouldn't suggest this 12-28mm lens for use on full-frame unless I also planned to use it on DX simply because of its restricted zoom range (18-28mm) on FX. 18-28mm isn't much of a zoom range (of course on DX it works from 12-28mm which gives the equivalent angle of view as an 18-42mm lens on full frame).

From Rockwell

The EF11-24F4L, if you can swing that ..... It's on my radar when it gets to 2499 or less ...

Seems simple to me .......YMMV

There are several DX lenses that will cover FF at some focal lengths. This Tokina is particularly adept at covering FF from 18mm - in fact Rockwell recommends it ! See his samples. If you find it does not "work" for you - spend some more money and buy a "FF wide angle".

Meister, not quit what Rockwell said and his statement is the lens vignettes. See his quote above. Just saying!

It may seem simple to you, but you are not the person asking for advice. The OP asked for advice for a wide angle lens for a Canon 7D. Full frame hasn't been mentioned yet. DX is not part of the Canon vernacular.

It may be part of the picture, but as yet it seems to add an unnecessary complication. Many people do not have your experience or a similar set of requirements.
