Other than insurance, being aware of your surroundings so that you neither look like nor become a victim is worth thinking about. Thieves often pick on the easiest looking targets, so find one or two really dumb and unaware tourists with expensive equipment and let the predators take them out of the herd!

If you do want to disguise your big white then here are a couple of options:

http://www.amazon.com/LensCoat-lc1004002bk-Cover-Canon-100-400/dp/B00W79B9W0/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1452535113&sr=8-6&keywords=lens+sleeve+Canon+100+-+400

If that would fit your requirement they are on Amazon Prime, so you could even get them before you leave!

Enjoy the trip, safely!

Cover the camera and accessories with fun, vivid children's stickers. This will make your gear appear cheap and non-professional. And make sure the applied stickers effectively hide all logos and model numbers on your gear!

If you carry your gear in a bag, make sure that it does not scream CAMERA

Agree with those here who say it's fairly safe to travel with your gear on a cruise. That said, I keep my gear in the cabin and only bring out what I think I will need while out and about. I highly suggest using a monopod as it is so much faster than setting up a tripod, which also limits your potential of being targeted. If you have a cabin with balcony you can bring tabletop tripod instead of big tripod to save room in gear bags. Go light as possible.

I would be more concerned about pickpockets. I listened to my friend whose lived in France. Igot a pocketbook that zipped and I put my wallet in a zippered compartment in the zippered pocketbook. On the subway being pushed by the crowd, I felt someone unzipping my pocketbook. I had the zipper opening facing my back. My wallet wasn't stollen.

Anyone who is in the business of stealing cameras knows all the tricks. They would spot that piece of tape from a mile away and may target you for trying to fool them. They will also know a camera make and model better than the guy/gal who sold it to you. They don't need to read it from a camera strap. Besides, how many cheap brands of DSLRs are there?

Right. I always wondered about those recommendations to put duct tape on the camera to make it look damaged. Professional thieves won't be fooled.

Carrying crisscross over your chest and having a strap with a steel cable inside will slow down a thief. I've also seen recommendations for using a diaper bag, or something similar, for carrying gear. Of course, if the couple if in their 60's, and there's no baby in sight, that's not going to fool anyone.

I hate those straps that shout the brand name. I immediately replace them with OP/TECH straps - very durable and comfortable.

I remember a videographer in New Orleans telling me he turned his head on a corner and back his Portabrace bag and camera gone. One thing I do is travel with bags that don't say camera.
There are backpacks that look like your carry bag.

Insurance is a problem for me. I shoot for art & testing for myself. And do some paid projects shoots mostly video with some stills included. I have my home owners but pro insurance is very expensive with big deductables. Usually have 5k in gear in one bag. I look the strap of bag when sitting or put it on a chair or table. When we traveled for shoots years ago the camera never left the shooter. At dinner it was their.

If anyone has a thought on insurance you help would be valuable. I have State Farm and they already turned down a claim on my homeowners. Good luck to everyone.

Another thought Europe is a wonderful place. In Florence I was walking with my wife and a US kid said nice camera when I passed. I walked towards my hotel on the other side of the bridge and sent my wife ahead shopping. I ducked into a online cafe and he left. Pickpockets and pro thieves are unbelievable. A number of years ago i was in Milan checking if my voucher would work in hotel. Got back in car and their was an explosion. 2 guys on a motorcycle broke the rear window rental card with a bar reached in and grabbed my carry bag that was my right on console. They did in in seconds. The mobs have addicted young people who rob for them. This never took away from wonderful people who have helped with directions and advice. Good luck

As for camera bags, I recommend this one. I've been using this for almost 5 years. It's inexpensive, carries all I need, and, best of all, it doesn't scream EXPENSIVE CAMERA INSIDE!!!

Additionally, I use a camera strap that is plain black, no readily observable logos. The strap is made by Upstrap.

One of the best companies, which whom I've dealt, regardless of product.
