B&H is selling the Sigma 150-600C for $989.99 and they will send you the Dock for free. I just bought one

Solves the cost problem but doesn't address the inquiry as to whether it is necessary.

Yes, it is only necessary if you want the BEST performance from your lens/camera combo - on a $400 17-70mm lens - not so much- on a $1000 - 150-600mm you betcha !

Maybe you are just one the very lucky ones that get maximum performance out of the box with no tweeking ?? - or maybe you never plan on changing camera bodies?

Your response assumes that the best performance can not be obtained right out of the box and that those who are able to secure it without the dock are somehow "lucky". You provide no empirical data for such an assumption. Nor does it address the thousands of lenses both from sigma and other manufacturers that perform exceptionally well without a dock or other adjustment., i.e., right out of the box. Some of the most expensive lenses on the planet don't require either a dock or micro adjustment. Sigma has you exactly where they want you. To maintain that the dock is necessary to extract best performance is sheer folly.

Thanks for your reply. I saw an add at Amazon which bundled the lens with a small back pack a monopad, uv filter and some other small goodies for the same price, sold thru Focus camera. I have since talked to Focus about a typo and will sell offer the same deal with free next day shipping. I may try for a deal

Thanks again.

Your attempt at misdirection was expected since you are clearly unable to support your assumptions. Hopefully, the op is savvy enough to ignore your rants.

In other words, lens manufacturers other than Sigma are all wrong and you are right? And further, Sigma purposely manufactures lenses that are defective and require adjustment right of the box? Yeah, I certainly see the wisdom of your post.

If you bothered to do a little research, you would find that the USB dock does more than adjust focus.

Is the dock absolutely needed? Probably not. However, it is another feature to get the most out of your lens and customize it to ones liking so, it can be very useful for various fine tuning perimeters.

It's not uncommon to tune focus on individual camera bodies with any lens, especially zooms. Many don't realize their lens can perform better than the results that they may be getting.

The "meister" is quite correct on this comment. Having owned both the Tamron and Sigma C 150-600mm lenses(still have the Sig), the dock allows for much finer adjustments than is available through the camera's AFMA. I was quite happy with the Sigma(traded the Tammy in) using just the 2 "simple" AFMA adjustments, with my 7Dmkii.
Using the dock allows for adjustments to 16 different focus points-and a noticeable difference in IQ.
NECESSARY?-NO
ADVISABLE-YES

that's my 2 cents worth.

I don't agree. My Tamron 150-600mm is used at 600mm virtually all the time & my shots are sharp (I have posted many of them in Photo Gallery). I attempted to do a routine 'fine tune' when I first bought it, but never had to change a thing as the focus was spot on as it came out of the box. Earl.

This is not always the case though as some do seem to require adjustments. Also, I would venture a guess that many people do not realize that their lenses are capable of even better images than what they may be getting.
