Thanks for the info. It will be a month or so before I do it. I took a big step last spring when I got my d7200, which I just love so the next item has to wait. I originally saw this lens with a budge thru amazon involving Focus camera.

I beg to differ. I have the Contemporary and use it on a Canon 70D. I have never experienced any focusing issues.

It is not "necessary". If you spend $1000 on a lens and need an additional piece of hardware to get it to focus, maybe you should look elsewhere. I have the Contemporary and have never experienced any focusing issues. See my recent white-throated sparrow photo in the gallery if you don't believe me.

It's not just for focusing issues. It also comes in handy for firmware updates.

Perhaps. But the op asked if it is necessary. It is not. FW updates are always optional.
