Steve where was the last photo (looking out of the cave) taken? I've seen other photos from this spot and cannot place it. All very nice photos BTW! TIA

Thanks, it's thunderstorm arch in valley of fire.

I love my 14-24, probably the lens I use the most for landscapes, although my 24-70 is an easy second place. Learning to see in ultra-wide can be tricky, but once you do it's very addicting. A few from the 14-24, feel free to check out more at my website under Landscapes (link in my sig)

My lens choices, also, (Nikon 14-24 zoom and Nikon 24-70 zoom) on a Nikon D4 (FX) body.

Don't overlook using a panorama setup. Then, it pretty much doesn't matter what body/lens combo you use. Occasionally, I go with a pano, especially on my D7000 (DX) body. Much more work, but results are generally worth it.

Was wondering what you all favor as a lens for landscapes. I heard so much about wide wide angles that I got one, a Sigma 10-20 f3.5 for my D7000. I am duly impressed after just a few shots of our indoor Christmas displays and a wide expanse of ocean scenery. The perspective is amazing. It covers most of what I consider my "periferal view". My walk around lens is an 18-200 but I now realize that it sort of limits my subject choices to things at a distance. Kind of like visualizing through blinders. Thanks for your thoughts.

I shoot the Tokina 16-28mm and love it.
I think 16-18mm is plenty and you are right about the kit lenses.

i'm all over the place, because landscape doesn't always equate to wide angle.

My Canon kit 18-55 seems to work well for me.

Canon 10-18 STM for tight places. Otherwise the Canon 24-105 covers a majority of landscape shots for me. I also use the Canon 100-400 regularly for landscapes where distance is an issue.
Getting it all in can make the grand scene look minuscule so be aware of this and compose carefully and choose the subject carefully.

As it stands right now, I use my Canon EF-S 10-22, Canon EF 16-32mm f2.8L, or Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC USM. When shooting with my 6D, I shoot "L" quality lenses, with the 7D Mark II, I'll add the EF-S 10-22. I also have Rokinon 8mm, and I'm looking at a Laowa lens for macro and scenery combined.
Actually, the lens is dependent on which camera I'm using, and what effect I'm looking for.

I am going to differ apparently in that my favorite landscape lens is a Nikkor 80-400 VR II. When I was shooting a crop-frame sensor it was a 70-300mm. For whatever reason and it dates back to my Nikkormat days circa 1972, I like the telephoto effect and rarely use a wide angle, though I have a 16-35 f4 VR, and I like the lens performance, I just don't like its PERSPECTIVE most of the time! The best landscape shooter I know is David Peterson, a former Iowa news guy. He swears by his Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8 ZE Lens for Canon EF

I too tend to reach for a longer lens! Back in my days of film and only prime lenses, my walk around lens was a 105 mm - set the hyperfocal distance and be ready for most anything. Today, I'm mostly zoom but still tend to go to the longer focal lengths. And I've never had the slightest desire to shoot a panorama; just don't visualize that way.

But, there are many scenes that are best shot with a wide angle lens. I often use something around 24 mm (full frame), but seldom go any wider when outdoors.

Anything from 21 to 500mm, depending upon my desired field of view.

I'm also a fan of the 24 tilt/shift though I use it more for cityscapes and architectural.
