Be SURE to take the 'official sunrise' tour, or maybe it's called a 'ranger talk.' As I recall, it was free, meets at one of the lodges, and goes to the 'best' overlook to see the sun rise. It was SPECTACULAR!!

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the overlooks.

The north rim IS different from the south. It's about 1000 ft higher in elevation, it's a 'forrest' rather than a 'desert.' But, it's a day's dirve to get there from the south rim.

What ever you do, you really MUST get below the rim, as another mentiomed. Several million people visit the GC each year and the average stay is about 2 hours, and only afew 10's of thousands ge below the rim.

Consider taking the mule ride. Decide NOW, though - it may already be sold out.

This is all IMHO, of course, based on 6 visits since 1983. Have a GREAT trip!

If you want to stay at Phantom Ranch it is too late. Resarvations are a year out.

Hello - Wife and I are planning on taking a week vacation to the Grand Canyon in Sept or Oct 2016. Since neither of us have been to this National Park; we are asking suggestions from those of you that have on where in the park are 4 or 5 Spectacular Locations to take Landscape Pictures of the area? You Tube wasn't all that helpful.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Start at Lee's Ferry and go down river stopping at the views from the road. All views are incredible. The best views are while hiking down to the river from the north rim. Far superior than the south rim trails for views, waterfalls and wildlife.

Also to consider is the Pink Jeep Tours. I took it and it was great. I do not know if they operate year round, but check into them. Easy to park your car where they are located and no hassles. No crowds with them. There is also the film you can see right at the Pink Jeep Tours. It is amazing documentary of the Grand Canyon and its history. Definitely a must see .

During the bus season they can't go where the busses go either.

One interesting possibility if you don't want to drive is to take the train from Las Vegas. It takes you right to the lodge. Then you use the bus.

I have no idea of the details on that.

I have been there several times and would suggest taking a tour with Pink Jeep they know all of the areas that have some of the most spectacular views of the canyon and the best part is you dont need to drive and can take all of the sights in along the way do a search for the Pink Jeep Tours and you can book a trip with them it is not cheap we paid $75.00 per person but was worth every penny you will not regret it.

from my journeys there, south rim and the bright angel trail. be warned, the park rangers do not allow you to climb down and back up the trail on the same day. there have been too many accidents and fatalities over the years. so, half way down should get you some nice photos. don't remember if you can experience the vishnu shist from half way down. but if you go all the way, and camp overnight, then you will get to see and touch it. the rock is velvet, darker than night and harder than diamond.
it is amazing.

Hello Red Baron,
Happy new year to you. Being an old native Arizonan, I have been to the Grand Canyon quite a few times. If you are driving there and have the time, I strongly suggest starting at the far East end of the canyon starting by Tuba City. it is a great way to enter and sometimes one will see mustangs. And the North is beautiful also, but crowded now. also along that road Native Americans have booths set up selling their wares, if souvenirs are of interest. Have a great trip.

I don't know your age, hiking ability, or your affluence level, but you might try going in to the nearby Havasupai tribal lands (west of South Rim) to photograph Havasu Falls, Navaho Falls, and the travertine pools on Havasu Creek. You can hike in, hike in while sending your gear in by mule, or take the helicopter ride down. You can stay at the lodge in Supai, the village. Or you can camp in the campground beyond the village. Flying in and staying at the lodge is the easiest way to visit, but it also incurs much more expense. Depending on you fitness, hiking in and camping can be a much less expensive option, but be aware of the strenuous demands that entails.

If you decide to go, start making plans now. You will want to make lodge or campground reservations early.

I worked on the North Rim for 3 summers and have a strong preference for that more secluded and pristine side. It is out-of-the-way and has much fewer tourists. Facilities are limited, so get reservations well in advance.

I also hikedboth the Bright Angle and Kaibab Trails in their entirety rim-to-rim. Great experience half a century ago.

Prepare to spend at least a day and catch the light from sunrise through to sunset and just for mood setting, listen to Ferde Grofe' Grand Canyon Suite.

Not sure there are many places you cannot walk away with a good shot around the canyon.
Advice on CP, tripod, remote is excellent. Favorite time is late afternoon for shooting.
Great side trip to Wupatki National monument. About 30 miles North of Flagstaff of state route 89. Drop dead beautiful partially rebuilt 800-900 year old ruins and some nice opportunities for some landscape shots as well. Walk the trails - leave tripod in car. CP, maybe a monopod.
Painted Desert, Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest, just few in same general area. Suggest emailing or phoning them directly to see what is or is not allowed or suggested as it has been a long time since last visit(s). Rangers are great resources and very helpful.

Skywalk is not part of Grand Canyon NP.
