Hello - Wife and I are planning on taking a week vacation to the Grand Canyon in Sept or Oct 2016. Since neither of us have been to this National Park; we are asking suggestions from those of you that have on where in the park are 4 or 5 Spectacular Locations to take Landscape Pictures of the area? You Tube wasn't all that helpful.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

When is more important than where. The park map takes you to where you need to go and if you go during the bus season it stops at the best places.
But September has become nearly the worst time to go to any of the main National Parks. The Asian Invasion peaks then. You need to wear a helmet to avoid getting whacked with a sefie stick.
Late October is much better for that and because the haze clears in winter. January is, IMHO, best if you don't mind ( possibly very) cold nights. Days can be wonderful. You can drive to where the busses go in season and have some of them to yourself.

Grand Canyon is a very beautiful place. Don't get taken in by the Sky Walk. I thought it was a real "con". The walk is so scratched up you cant see through it and you are not allowed to take anything on the walk with you. That includes Hand Bags, Cameras, Etc. You have to put everything an a locker that they provide. The meal they give you as part of the tour package might as well go straight in the garbage. I was in Grand Canyon in the 60's before it was consumed by the Indian entrepreneurs. It was much better in the old days.

That is outside the National Park. There are only standard National Park concessions in the Park.
I might add it is best to take a rental car if you have time. Even in bus season the busses cover a limited area.
We thank you for all of your comments and suggestions. The reply's have been most helpful.

I have been to the Grand Canyon several times. I have been to the North Rim and to the South Rim. I have walked down the Bright Angel (sp?, name?) trail into the Canyon. We went maybe 1/4 to 1/2 way down. I have also rafted down the Grand Canyon for 7 days.
The Grand Canyon is huge and beautiful. You can not take it all in from just a few spots. You can not go wrong by going to the popular viewing vistas. They will all be great. I would pay attention to the other comments about avoiding the crowds. All the viewing sites will be memorable. Try and view initially the scope of the view you are at and then try and isolate in on limited areas to get a sense for the incredible diversity of the scenery. You can not go wrong.
BTW be sure to bring a CP filter, tripod, and remote release (to avoid camera shake).
You want to use at least f16 and ISO 100 to maximize DOF. CP helps intensify colors and reduce haze.
I need to get back there as I have a much better landscape lens now than I did then (Jan 2014). Might do it next month or February on our way south.

Wow, spectacular canyon shots. The clarity of the photos is excellent. The colors make the pictures.
So if the Colorado river carved out the canyon, Where did all the dirt go?
Great Images of the Grand Canyon.

Areas either side of the Colorado (rivers drop suspended material along its banks. Over time the river changes course as the meanders change). A lot ended up in the Sea of Cortez (especially dissolved particulates). Some was shipped by barge to Florida to be used as landfill.
OK, I made that last part up. 8-)
Also to consider is the Pink Jeep Tours. I took it and it was great. I do not know if they operate year round, but check into them. Easy to park your car where they are located and no hassles. No crowds with them. There is also the film you can see right at the Pink Jeep Tours. It is amazing documentary of the Grand Canyon and its history. Definitely a must see .
Be SURE to take the 'official sunrise' tour, or maybe it's called a 'ranger talk.' As I recall, it was free, meets at one of the lodges, and goes to the 'best' overlook to see the sun rise. It was SPECTACULAR!!
I don't think you can go wrong with any of the overlooks.
The north rim IS different from the south. It's about 1000 ft higher in elevation, it's a 'forrest' rather than a 'desert.' But, it's a day's dirve to get there from the south rim.
What ever you do, you really MUST get below the rim, as another mentiomed. Several million people visit the GC each year and the average stay is about 2 hours, and only afew 10's of thousands ge below the rim.
Consider taking the mule ride. Decide NOW, though - it may already be sold out.
This is all IMHO, of course, based on 6 visits since 1983. Have a GREAT trip!

The vast majority of people going to the Grand Canyon take their pictures along the South Rim, after landing in Flagstaff. Although there are some excellent places to photograph there, anyone who has driven to the North Rim, either from Flagstaff or from Las Vegas (better) know that the extra effort is definitely worth it. The North Rim closes in October and reopens in May, but if you make your reservations now, there should be no problem. I have yet to find a place on the North Rim where could not make some excellent images. Enjoy!
