Howdy y'all. Names Michael. Just getting started in photography. Sure, I took some snapshots here and there along the way, usually with whatever smart phone I had at the time, and I tried to make them as nice as possible, but...

Anyway, I'm a noob. I don't know much, not even what all I don't know... First time I saw the word 'bokeh' come across the screen, I thought, 'Isn't that those wooden swords?' Yeah, but I'm trying to learn as much, as fast as I can, hence why I'm here.

So, I've got a Nikon Coolpix P900. Sniped one off of Bestbuy.com. So far I really like it. My noobie review is on my posted pics of the Christmas full moon, http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-357421-1.html#6028462 . Basically, I saw somewhere, maybe on facebook, some zoomed in pics of the moon, and I thought, I've gotta get that camera...so I did. It's teaching me a lot.

You might ask what kind of things I like to take photograph. I've seen general subjects like: portraits, landscapes, wildlife, birding, flowers, snapshots. So far, I don't think I have an absolute preference, though I lean toward anything outside. Love nature, so mostly that direction. Although, I do like portraits as well.

Well, that's the Reader's Digest summary of me...

I started on a Nikon superzoom when I wanted to go above and beyond plain point and shoot, a P90 to be exact. I've progressed to DSLRs over the years, but still carry a P600 as my backup. My advice is to let the amazing computer that is in every modern camera teach you. You probably have 40 Scene modes built into that camera. And Auto. Let the camera choose what to do, then study the settings it chose. Begin to work in Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and finally Manual mode as you figure things out. I still "cheat" this way with a D7200 to get a good starting point, then I take more control to accomplish the look I want. Lots of good book recommendations here at the Hog, immerse yourself. Glad you're here...

Aloha Michael and welcome to UHH. Nice set of intro photos. Like #1 & 3. #3 has a very nice bokeh. What size lens are you using?

[quote=mjames42]Welcome to the HOG, MJames42. Most here like the subjects that you listed. Most here wish to learn to improve there picture taking. If you do, then post and ask for advise. I did. There are many here that will give you valuable tips. If you don't ask for help you will get a lot of "that's nice" which does not help. David
