As of Thanksgiving, we have lived in this house for twenty years. In that time, I have never seen a raptor pay us a call. I would not have seen it, today, if it were not for the watchful eyes of Mrs. Anvil. She noticed a big, hawk-like bird on the fence.

I believe this to be a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. I have erred, in the past, and there is no reason to believe I've become immune to future errors, but I'm going to stick with this identification (with minimal finger-crossing).

There is no better place to photograph hawks than in your own yard, provided they show up.

You did a nice job with the images. Tell the misses to keep looking. You apparently make a good team. :)

Great shots. Good resolution. How long did he hang around? Any stray feathers on the ground from his meal

Thank you, all!

We used to get more birds in the yard, back when we kept feeders full of seed. That also attracted some much less desirable critters, who found their way into the garage, where the seed was stored. Those undesirables either fled, or met other fates, but the bird seed buffet had to stop. These days, the only birds that get fed are the hummingbirds.

This bird stayed about ten minutes, including the time it took for me to get out there with a camera. I kept getting closer, and taking more shots. Finally, it had enough of me.

Very nice capture's, I'm thinking coopers hawk also. They like to hangout near bird feeders.

A beauty!

We have one occasionally at my apartment complex. I photo'd it on the roof of someone's car :)
