Great shots! We have raptors hunt our yard all the time.

As of Thanksgiving, we have lived in this house for twenty years. In that time, I have never seen a raptor pay us a call. I would not have seen it, today, if it were not for the watchful eyes of Mrs. Anvil. She noticed a big, hawk-like bird on the fence.

I believe this to be a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. I have erred, in the past, and there is no reason to believe I've become immune to future errors, but I'm going to stick with this identification (with minimal finger-crossing).

We have had a Cooper's hawk nest in a Eucalyptus tree across the street for the last several years and every year we get visited by the fledglings when they learn to fly. They like to use my front porch as a great place to eat their prey (it is surrounded by a patio wall and has a running fountain) and this is getting old. I have to go out daily and clean up various and assorted body parts of their prey and then use a pressure washer to clean the hawk poop off the porch.(Hawk poop is like thick white paint and after it dries, is damn near impossible to clean off) Other than these minor problems, it is a great opportunity to observe these awesome raptors up close. I hope you have the same opportunity for years to come.

Thanks!

It took twenty years for the first hawk to get here, I'm not really expecting any frequent guests. A lot has changed, over the years. The only regular guests we have, these days, are hummingbirds.
