Cameras are limited in time and format when it comes to video. This is due to some tax requirement (obscure non-sense stuff) but it prevents cameras to film more then 10~20 minutes at a time? (not sure here)

If you do short clip and have the tool this may work.

Still, since you seem to be sort of short in cash flow be careful.

According to Jason Lanier, to be classified as a "camera" they are required to do an auto shut-off in 30 minutes. Beyond that, we have camcorders/video cameras. Apparently this only matters to the federal government for some mysterious reason, probably as means to levy a different or greater import duty, but just guessing on the latter.

If you and your wife are happy with the pictures from your phone then it is easy to re-size them with software available free on the Internet. I use Light Image Resizer available here: http://www.obviousidea.com/windows-software/light-image-resizer/ With a little practice the Camera you mentioned will give you better images than your phone. It will also also introduce you the the hobby of photography!

I am looking to buy a camera mainly to take pics of my wife for some photo contest. I have been using my Samsung Note 4 smartphone. It seems to take great pics everyone says when they see them. But I need to stay under 3-4 mp for upload purpuses. I have a opportunity to buy a Canon Rebel XTI dlsr with a ef-s 18-55mm lens. It has all the cords, charger, paperwork battery, case and 2 SD cards. Is this a good camera for 175.00 I am sure it is but will it suit my needs. I have heard canon is good for low lighting as well. Also do it do video

If everything is there and everything works, the XTi will surely do what you want to do. It fits the Mp range and seems a good price. People will tell you to check the shutter count, but being a past Canon user of APSc and full frame, I will tell you that's almost impossible to do without sending it to Canon and paying for a count. The on line shutter count programs do not work on older Canon DSLR.

Second point, with out much knowledge, your first digital camera (aside from phone) will not be your last if you get into it. If you take to higher level photography, you will be lucky if your first selection lasts you one year before GAS sets in (Gear Acquisition Syndrome... the desire to have a "better camera" or lens).

In the meantime the XTi will meet the requirements you set. Don't spend more, until you think you want to start dragging a bigger camera than your cell phone around. You are already spoiled on that score. You think your phone is adequate for most things... It probably is!

I also enjoy shooting her in motion from pose to pose. I can shoot her for hours. Anywhere from on the bed sitting in a chair to laying on the chase lounge. I also enjoy taking pics of her leaning against my car at night in a parking lot under a street light

I was rather obsessed with photographing my wife. Then she took out a restraining order on me, specific to whether I had a camera in my hands. Everything else was OK. Sometimes, one can go too far!

If in good condition well worth getting as it will allow unlimited growth in the future if you are so inclined. Good luck and let us see those shots with the new Canon.

Drthomps01, Spend your money wisely on a membership to a local camera club and a class in digital photography. You will then learn what features you'll want in a camera and can then go shopping based on your knowledge and not what someone else is using. Best, J. Goffe

This is a kit lens I think. Yes they ok but to get D.O.F ( depth of field) you will need different glass, or good distance from your model to back the ground. You can edit your work on a computer. But you have to have a good knowledge on the software to pull it off, so it looks right and not forced.

I can't comment on Nikon for video, but a used Canon Rebel T2i, T3i, T4i, or T5i would all be good value for both stills and video. The T4i and T5i have a few enhancements that help with video.

One option with these cameras is that there is an unsupported run time software package available called Magic Lantern that adds a lot to the video capability of these cameras. I have it installed on both a T2i and a T3i and find it both very useful and stable. It doesn't modify the camera, just boots up when the camera is turned on and adds more functionality: http://www.magiclantern.fm/

For video you may also want a reasonable external mic. Rode and Shure are good brands.

As for video duration, others have advised that the longest segment you can record is 4GB with the cameras, which gives about 12 mins at 1080p. Generally the 30 min limit as mentioned is not an issue since most video is not shot as continuous segments. If you need to do archival footage of a long event it could be an issue, but for what you are suggesting it should be OK.

I'm assuming that you have or will get video editing software to create your work.

Good luck.

You have just outlined several different set ups requiring different photographic knowledge to do well. Something like the Nikon D3300 with two kit lenses should serve you well, but you will still need to learn how to use it to get the best results. If you give us some idea where you live( what state or country) we might be better able to advise you on learning opportunities or classes that would interest you.
