Has anybody ever considered that such a section here would be a very good addition to the forum? I ask because there is an underwater forum that for what Ive seen has very, very low transit. Perhaps making a forum like I propose would include much more variety, including any underwater wildlife. A forum section here is dedicated to BIF and birds in water?? Isn't that like too specific? I think a wildlife section would make much more sense and its a very common interest shared by many.

Anyways just thought I commented some of the my views about the current section selection in the forums.

I think this to be a definitely creditable idea.
I don't believe it would step on the toes of the BIF/BOW Section, as clearly specialized as that sort of photography be.
Nor would a new section for all sorts of wildlife images step on the toes of the macro section, which tends to attract those technically especially oriented toward macro techniques.
As one whose "bags" are landscape, wildlife, and Zoo animal portraits, I think the section ought rule out images of captive wildlife and cultivated wild flowers. The "wild" in "wildlife" ought significantly stand for what it means and what it signifies concerning the challenges met by the photographer.

I think most flower shots are actually posted in the "Close up" section. Flower parts such as pollen clusters (for example) will usually be posted in the "True Macro" section unless they are flowers the size of a dime or smaller.

I think a Wildlife/Nature section is worth considering. Finding someone to manage it would likely be the biggest hurdle.

Thanks for the support. I think there are LOTS of more than capable members here that could manage such a section. Macronaut? Uuglypher?...what you say? LOL!

Its not unfamiliar to me, at all. Just feel free to check my Flickr. I have a whole album dedicated to BIF.
We encourage long-lens photographers to post in BIF/BOW to show examples of lens capabilities, and to contribute their knowledge to help other photographers learn the discipline. Had you ever posted in BIF/BOW, your expertise would already have been appreciated by novice and beginning bird photographers. As preciously mentioned BIF/BOW is geared towards furthering education more than as a showcase. Basically, don't knock a forum until you have tried it.

And I may do in the future....but that does not disqualify a wildlife section as a much more appreciated section with a lot more potential for traffic and growth than a highly specific one like BIF. I believe a BIF would make much more sense as a subsection under a wildlife forum.

Not so. Insects and Arachnids, yes. Most wildflower shots are not taken at 1:1 or greater magnification, since most wildflower blooms are larger than 36 mm.

We would need to see more interest, I think, before getting into a discussion about the guidelines and purpose and who is willing to manage things. Maybe we could invite people to this thread who may be interested?

I made a thread in the BIF, so I thought it may be of interest to you.

I contacted the admin but in order to make this happen and have a chance the person willing to monitor the section should contact the Admin directly. If there is no one willing to do it it will never happen.

Thanks.

Should it develop that there is a core group of people with a shared purpose for the new section, and who are at least moderately active, the chore of administration becomes much easier and that barrier disappears. I will talk privately to other section leaders for some feedback on that subject.

My opinion as to the purpose would be a section for people who are photographing flora and fauna in native settings, in other words, people who have a strong interest in nature as well as in photography.

I appreciate the idea of a more general Wildlife section, even though my main interest is BIF/BOW. In pursuing that passion, I also take advantage of opportunities for HDR landscapes, sunrises, sunsets, fauna and other natural subjects that don't fit a narrow specialty interest. I also really appreciate the expertise and help that is shared at the BIF forum here, it really is a specialty for those that take it seriously. I hope a group of interested parties with the time and energy to moderate a more general forum step up to the plate. Good idea Chaman and good points by all in this thread. There's plenty of room to coexist here.
