I only ask the cost because I'm just getting back into "real"camera stuff after doing point-and-shoots and video. I'm trying to get a fix on what's what since 35mm. Want to see my slides?

So are you going to tell us what it is???????
It's an SMC Pentax 500mm f:4.5
Hold on you bought a lens without handling it, looking through it, finding out if it served your purpose
Get a Swifter right away. You'll be dusting it regularly

Congratulations. I hope you really enjoy your monster. I have a Canon 400mm F2.8 IS. Once, while I was using it atop Mount Scott in Oklahoma, I was literally mobbed by people who had never before seen anything like it. They thought I was some celebrity photographer. My pictures were okay, too. Yours will be as well.

You better guy yourself a gimbal head for the tripod. That ball head is going to flop around like a fish out of water with all that weight on it. Gimbal!

But will it AF???
This lens is totally manual. There is no such thing as AF with this lens.
I have this same lens. It is big and heavy. And you really need a Gimbal mount. It is not real sharp wide open at f4.5. And it improves a lot when stopped down. By f11, it is quite good.
Its not a good idea using a TC with this lens.
I also have a Tamron 150-600, and the Tamron is sharper at 500mm and can be used with a wider aperture. But it too is noticeably sharper at around f8.

You have someone to lug it around when you go out shooting?
Will you be using it hand held?

Thanks for the info. I had a Pentax Spotmatic in the day and always wanted a 500mm but never got one.

Less than 8 pounds? Pfffft. How much does that spear and shield and the armor weigh in your avatar?
I think that is without the camera. Add that and you got your 8 lbs!
Set it up in front of a background of tenches to show off its howitzer capability. :-)
