When looking through your viewfinder: REALLY LOOK! Don't just line it up and pull the trigger. Look side to side, up to down, notice what's there and what's NOT there. If you can't see well through your viewfinder use "live-view", if you can't do that, think about getting a different camera.
"Push and Pray" might work on a slot machine, but not in photography!
Great question Fran!

Good answer too Danilo

The Sunny Rule: 1/ ISO is f 16 shutter speed.

Every photograph needs to convey an emotion.

There's more to composition than the Rule-of-Thirds.

Rules can be (and probably should be) broken--like those above.

Never seen that shutter speed one before Prof. Gotta try that! The others I've believed in for a long time.

I recieved many great tips on this site. Two standouts for me are: 1. Place a couple Silica packets that come from other purchases in your camera bag to absorb moisture. 2. Make sure to turn your circular polarized filter to adjust the color and glare.

You do not need expensive gear to be a great photographer, you need a great pair of eyes and a mind with vision. Also the alternative to a long lens is a short walk.

My #1 tip is to choose a digital photo editing program and then learn how to use it.

Avoid blurry photos by making sure shutter speed is fast enough for handheld shots, or use a tripod.

To paraphrase the great George Bernard Shaw. Remember that "a camera is like a codfish, which lays a million eggs on the chance that one will survive"
It's too easy, with modern digicams, to copy that fish. Surely it is better to shoot less and make the ones you do shoot really count!
