Set your white balance to cloudy (unless there is a good reason not to).

When looking through your viewfinder: REALLY LOOK! Don't just line it up and pull the trigger. Look side to side, up to down, notice what's there and what's NOT there. If you can't see well through your viewfinder use "live-view", if you can't do that, think about getting a different camera.
"Push and Pray" might work on a slot machine, but not in photography!
Great question Fran!

Danilo, I live in Las Vegas, too. Please tell me what slot machines pay with "Push and Pray"!
I've been searching and haven't found them!

Read {Understanding Exposure 3rd edition} by Brian Peterson and anything else he wrote. If you don't understand How a Camera Works then all the little tips won't help. And almost forgot, If you don't know How a Camera works then your up creek without a paddle asking, how does this work??

If you download your manual you will usually get one newer than the oem. Plus you can print selected pages!!

Most of what was already said, but for your own benefit, take what pleases you most. If you are not photographing for a client, please yourself first with your pictures. Don't chase other people's style or subjects. HAVE FUN!

It is just my opinion, you don't have to follow it.

Don't listen to everyone's suggestions. Read the manual and practice. Find honest friends who will give constructive feedback...

Although "f/8 and be there" ain't bad!

My comment was a tip. Just because my post came after yours doesn't mean I responded to you.

Buy the best glass you can afford. It really makes a difference in the quality of the photo.

This is the best tip! The hardest thing to learn is to look at what you see in the viewfinder. How many holiday snaps have you seen where the photographer has put someone's face at the dead centre of the picture? S/He has looked THROUGH the viewfinder and ignored everything else, like trees and lamp posts growing out of heads!
