The only one at that price new would be the 50 1.8, I think?

Look into fast AIs manual lens. They are cheap and you will be blown away.

I would go with the 50mm f1.8 myself. Makes a good portrait lens as well.

For that money...maybe have a look at the Nikon 40 or 60mm macro lens.

Also consider the Nikon 40mm f/2.8 DX macro. It's great for general photography. I use it for general photography and macro when I want to get close to the subject. It's extremely sharp, has almost zero distortion and very good bokeh. Out-of-focus highlight areas are nice and round. I would read Ken Rockwell's review of the Nikon 35mm f/1.8. It's sharp but has poor bokeh and a lot of barrel distortion.

The Nikon 35mm af-s dx lens is great for indoor portraits and for walking around. The 50mm af-s dx is great for outdoor portraits. Both lens will give plenty of bokeh when opened up but the 50mm provides more. It depends what you like to shoot.

I just got both the 35mm f1.8 and the 50mm f1.8 for use on my D5300. Both are nice and sharp and work well. You cannot go wrong with either. If I can only bring one lens with my I give the nod to the 35mm as it has the greater FOV. Otherwise, they are both small enough that the spare can be put into a large pocket without really noticing it.

whatever you get, make sure it is an fx lens, not dx. that way when you decide to upgrade your camera to a full frame camera like a d750, you will be ready to go. that said, the 35mm lens or the 50mm lens will be your best choice.

You have not said to us which is going to be the primary use of the prime lens you want us to recommend. It is not the same a prime for landscapes than a prime for portraits or macro photography.

Boy do I not agree with that statement. Why not buy Canon with an adapter so when you change brands.

Buy a balanced lens for camera buy it at a price so that it can be remarketed. I know some people that keep their glass longer than their mate, but give me a break that just don't make sense to me.
