I just purchased a Nikon D7200 to replace a Nikon 3100. I would like to have a recommendation for a prime lens for less than $250.
I am a Conon guy. Most seems to go 35mm as a start prime. Get the one appropriate to your lens.

I suggest the Nikon DX AF-S 35 mm f/1.8 G.
You need to take you zoom lens and set it at 35 mm and take some pictures then set it at 50 mm and take some pictures. See which one you like the best (you may want to try some other focal lengths too. Only you can say which one fits you the best. That said the 35 mm will give you the field of view that is close to the human eye. This is the why many suggest it. If you are planing on using it for portraits the 35 will tend to distort and give your subjects big noses. The 50 will so better. If you want to blur your backgrounds the 50 is better for that too. - Dave

With a 7200, you need the 35mm 1.8 DX.

I have the 35mm f1.8 DX on my D7200. It is an awesome lens and you can't go wrong with it for ~$200.
Thank you for quick replies! I had just about settled on one the one you all recommended after reading B & H. Thanks again.

Photographing people - 50mm/1.8. Everything else (including people) - 35mm/1.8 DX, both are excellent and under $200.
There aren't too many prime designed for the D7200. The 35mm f/1.8 DX is one and a couple of the macro lenses.
If it were me, I would get a 24 f2.8 Nikkor AF or the 55mm f2.8 AF macro - these are $250-300 on ebay or KEH.
Why those rather than the 35's that all are using?

Never liked the equiv. 50mm F.O.V. - prefer either slightly wide - or - slightly long with close capable. The 24 having a 36mm FOV and the 55 an 80mm FOV.
