Peak in MA was the 3rd week in Oct. this year. It was the 1st and 2nd week in NH and VT. I would just get out a Gazetteer or two and take the back roads. Can't go wrong. Acadia is beautiful and fun.
Most of the online peak foliage guides are at least a week or more late on their predictions, and most of the sharp clear color has already fallen to the ground.
Think maple trees with their usually bright oranges and reds.
What is left on the trees would be oaks, which turn from green to gold to brown.
The locals want you to travel to their area to spend money, and if they are the ones reporting the foliage conditions, of course the reports could be exagerated.

Thanks in advance!
In Bayonne see the 911 Memorial done by the Russians. A most excellent memorial and very photogenic.
Living in Vermont for over 20 years, the vivid color is usually last week in September and first week in October. The Maples turn red and the birch turn yellow. Over 3 million people come to Vermont to see that color. We call them leaf peepers.
I would suggest:
Trapp Family Lodge..great views aand world famous

I have many Vermont images on my website:
www.fineartphotographyplus.comHave a great trip. In Boston make sure you checkout the old north end. Outstanding Italian food.

{1) With regard to fall colors, would I better to make my drive before or after the above mentioned dates? I am thinking after.}
Definitely AFTER. Fall colors vary from year to year based on the amount of rain, etc, but the colors change later the further north you go. Sounds like a wonderful time ahead of you. Enjoy!
Correction: The colors change
earlier the farther north you go. The colder the climate the earlier the leaves change. That having been said, Columbus Day Weekend is usually considered near the peak leaf peeping season in mid to northern New England.

Thanks in advance!

Check the web sites that have Fall Color camera's all around the country. Such sites have information about Fall Seasons pertinent to the locales you may visit, including the date ranges of current and past seasons and active 24 hour camera's showing many locations. Some also anticipate when the best range of times will be for upcoming seasons in various locations.
There are regional sites that offer this on your computer all around the US.
I would start by looking at regions and dates of peak colors for this year and perhaps last year.
Google fall color cameras.
If you go to Acadia (you should) don't miss the Schoodic Point portion of the park (not on Mount Desert Island). There are websights that make foliage prediction which can vary a few weeks based on weather. We spend summers in Belfast ME. Weather is a big factor in "leaf peeping".
If you make it all the way to Acadia, don't forget Schoodic Peninsula in addition to Mt. Desert!! Great place for picnics as well as pix!!
Schoodic Peninsula is well worth the trip, however right in Bar Harbor is Bar Island, go as low tide approaches and get back as the tide comes in, if you miscalculate your stuck there, also several good sunrise spots in addition to Cadillac Mountain along the park road, Seawall area nice, oh too many to mention, Bob.

Actually, the color changes begin earlier the further north you go. It has to do with length of day as a function of lattitude.

I took both Nova Scotia and Massachusetts trips this year, so I might be able to help you. I was in western Massachusetts and, totally by serendipity, hit at peak foliage. I was there on October 16th. There would be very little, if any, difference between Boston and Pittsfield foliage, as they're only 135 miles apart in east-west direction and at roughly the same latitude. Peak change based on the preceding weather, but I still think your October 16th date is spot on.
Nova Scotia is wonderful! We were there from immediately after Labor Day until September 18th and spent about a third of our time in the Annapolis Valley (take a wine tour), half in Cape Breton (
amazing vistas along the Cabot Trail), and the remaining couple of days in the Halifax/Yarmouth area. I hated Peggy's Cove, as it reminded me of a gumdrop on a hot summer's sidewalk, with tourists playing the part of ants. If you're in to photographing cliches, it's Nirvana, otherwise...
If you want more detail or lodging recommendations, pm me. Have a great time, and hoist a Garrison Nut Brown Ale for me.

For Fall foliage, you might want to delay by a week or so. However, timing of "peak" colors is dependent on Summer weather, rain, drought, etc. so is always a guessing game.
If lighthouses are your thing, check out Watch Hill, RI and Beavertail Light on Jamestown I., RI. AND there are great seascapes in both locations as well as lighthouses, seascapes and foliage all up and down the Maine coast.
Enjoy New England.
From NJ to Boston- after the cruise-colors here in Phila peak in late Oct.

I endorse all above suggestions plus if you want mountain scenic and waterfalls, don't miss "Franconia Notch".
