I will be taking an east coast and Nova Scotia cruise next year from 10/2 to 10/16. Also plan on driving from Bayonne, NJ to the Boston area taking in the sights. Two questions:
1) With regard to fall colors, would I better to make my drive before or after the above mentioned dates? I am thinking after.
2) Only place on my "for sure" list of places to see is Acadia National Park. Any other suggestions would be appreciated! (FYI - Not really a big fan of the touristy sights such as Paul Revere's house, etc., but rather landscapes, oceanscapes including lighthouses, waterfalls, etc.).
Thanks in advance!

Definitely AFTER. Fall colors vary from year to year based on the amount of rain, etc, but the colors change later the further north you go. Sounds like a wonderful time ahead of you. Enjoy!
I think fall foliage peaks while you are on your cruise. Since your driving is sort of in the lower NE (Bayonne to Boston) area the foliage might be better after the cruise than before. However, you also mention Acadia National Park, which is WAY north of Boston. That might be better before. It looks like the cruise is a foliage cruise given the dates.

Your dates are probably good for Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for fall colours. I think that I read somewhere that the fall colours move southerly at 25 miles a day.
Fundy National Park in N.B. has interesting tidal rock forms and high tides. Go at low tide.
In N.S., everyone and his dog visits Peggys Cove for it's iconic lighthouse, village and thunderous, crashing waves upon rocks. Try to go there in a hurricaine (take raingear)which happen here in the fall:)

Portland Head Light is nice. Many small quaint villages and harbors all along the coastline from Massachusetts and north through Maine.

I think he meant earlier.
This year the first week of Oct was too early in upstate NY.
Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. It's right on the way if you're going up 95 (the main route north from NY to Boston)

Did I get it backwards?? The leaves change in the south first? Dang! I've lived in DE my whole life. Oh well. Sorry. And I'm a she. (-:

I second Mystic...although nowadays very touristy indeed. Might be OK during the week this time of year.
You might consider Ferry to Nantucket or Block Island. Cape Cod could be nice then....summer hoards gone.
East Coast not the place for waterfalls and you need to get up to Maine for great rocky seacoast.
Night shots of New York from Bayonne area ( e.g. Hoboken) are awesome...although I have to admit to not being there since graduating College in 1968.
Where are your ports of call for the cruise and how long do you get to explore in each?

They change earlier in the north and at higher elevations. So the mountains in Vermont change before the coast in Maine but the coast in Maine changes before the coast in Boston.

US: Bayonne, NJ > Bar Harbor > Portland > Boston
BC: Halifax > Sydney > Charlottetown > Quebec City
Thanks for all the replies thus far!

You will be covering the coast during the cruise. If you do a drive before the cruise, you could go inland and explore the mountains in New York, Vermont and New Hampshire. If after, central Mass, Connecticut, the piedmont in New York and Northern New Jersey.
In Halifax, you'll probably want to see The Citadel, the fortress that guards the city against the French (and Yankees too )
