The earliest use of the term I have run into was some years ago, and involved film cameras in a day when zooms were of doubtful quality. It simply meant start with a 50mm "standard" lens, add a wide angle and a long lens, often an 85mm to 100mm most useful for portraits.

That sounds quite logical!

For me I converted the Nikon Holy Trinity to the 16-35 F4,the 24-70 f4 and the 70-200 f4. I don't want the 2.8 weight. The only I'm really losing is the 2.8 and the weight and not so much money. On than that they are nearly the equal of the 2.8's and this is on a D800E.

One other thing, if you don't print or print very rarely,in many cases an ultra sharp lens is a waste of money.

I print and I print big.

They are talking about the lenses for full frame cameras, all three are f 2.8.
Have not heard about an N6006 in a while. I still have my first slr, an N4004 which I later upgraded to an N8008. I try to shoot a roll of Ektar or T Max every year or so.

uote=Txauditr]I often hear the nomenclature "the holy trinity" referred to on this forum I am assuming this refers to specific lenses for specific cameras .....am I right?
If so I am shooting a Nikon 7100 ......what lenses does this refer to as I have the 2 basic kit lenses which came with the camera (Nikon DX VR 18-140 3.5-5.6G and Nikon DX55-300mm 4.5-5.6G) In addition I have a Sigma 28 - 300mm 3.5-6.3D which I formerly used on an old Nikon 6006 film camera. I like the Sigma lens as it small and compact but what should I be shooting and what is the "Trinity"[/quote]

The majority of professionals on this list consider this trinity to be the complete set for most situations. These happen to be very high quality zoom lenses that are a relatively new concept. In the remote past of the film era, when traveling light but still needing a variety of prime lenses, the holy trinity was something like: 28mm, 50mm, and 135mm.

Yes, this is the "holy trinity". Great lenses, I have all three.

Indeed, these lenses are the "Holy Trinity" for Nikon FX. I don't believe there is a comparable lineup of lenses for DX bodies. ;)

I had that for my Exakta back in the '50's

The trinity is the Nikon 14-24, 24-70 and the 70-200. Its probably called the holy trinity because after laying out all that cash you feel like a monk who has taken a vow of poverty.

Me too! I still have the Exakta with a knife in it for cutting the film!

I don't have the Exakta any more but I remember loading film from bulk rolls and cutting it off rather than wasting half a roll when I was done with a shoot.

Can someone give a specific example of the single best use for each of the Full Frame Trinity? Really appreciate it...

I think for Canon's it would be the 16-35, the 24-70, and the 70-200. Very similar to the Nikon choices.

Had me looking!
I assume you mean the 24-120 f/4 vs the 24-70 2.8.
Nikon doesn't make a 24-70 f/4.
Been looking at the 24-120 lately myself.
I have Nikon's holy trinity, use the 24-70 and 70-200 a lot, but only occasionally use the 14-24.
In retrospect, I'd probably use the 16-35 more if I had it instead.
