Well heck, now I can't get American Pie out of my head. "And the three men I admire most, the father, son, and the Holy Ghost, they took the last train for the coast..."

thanks for all the good information. I really appreciate it. the two lenses that I currently have seem to be serving me well as long as I am learning the adjustments and how to use the new camera. right now I don't think I need any new toys. thank you for all the input
I hope to see a few of you down south this winter

Thanks for sharing, Newfie. I wasn't familiar with the 17-55 2.8.

You'll hear that term tossed around by the jargon centric, or jargon focused folks here. The two lenses you have would seem to cover the focal length range needed by most anyone.

Additionally, the focal lengths referred to by those will vary determined by whether you are using a DX for FX format camera.

Actually it is not here it is tossed around, we just use it. It is an industry description for three specific, high end Nikon Lens', The 14-24, 24-70 and the 70-200. all FX and all 2.8. So fast, clear and gives high quality photographs.

Or for photographers to say the have them although they seldom use two of the three. - Dave

Hummm, I have there three and two others that are in the second group after the Trinity. I do carry both the 24 and 70 on my hips at weddings. The 14 comes out for quite a few 'special' shots at weeding the other two cannot handle. If you are in the business of taking photographs, you do use all three..............and then some. If you are an occasional photographer who has GAS then I might agree with you. But not all photographers shoot the same for the same reason. These are worth while lens' to have. their quality is unmatched. There is a reason they are expensive.

The 'trinity' are the 17/35, 24/70, 70/200 F2.8 Nikkors, to which can be added the 200/400 F4 to make the complete set of top of the range Nikon zooms. These are regarded as the best Nikon zoom lenses and were considered the basic equipment to have at least some years ago.

There is lots of talk about other lenses that people prefer as being the equal of these but so far none has matched them for performance and sharpness.

I often hear the nomenclature "the holy trinity" referred to on this forum I am assuming this refers to specific lenses for specific cameras .....am I right?
If so I am shooting a Nikon 7100 ......what lenses does this refer to as I have the 2 basic kit lenses which came with the camera (Nikon DX VR 18-140 3.5-5.6G and Nikon DX55-300mm 4.5-5.6G) In addition I have a Sigma 28 - 300mm 3.5-6.3D which I formerly used on an old Nikon 6006 film camera. I like the Sigma lens as it small and compact but what should I be shooting and what is the "Trinity"
I often hear the nomenclature "the holy trini... (show quote)

Rather than spend roughly $6,000, I got two of Nikon's previous top lenses, the 85-200mm f/2.8, and 35-70mm f/2.8, both for $980. I like the large aperture, sharp images, and low price. I also have a Tokina 16-28mm f.2.8. These three work fine for me.

If money is not an issue, and you can spread out the purchases, getting the Trinity is a good idea.

Trinity- from the Latin "threefold"

For the Nikon d7100 The Holy Trinity from my research and experience are:

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro for Nikon DX
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm.htm

Nikon AF-S DX 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-200mm-ii.htm

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4E PF ED VR
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/300mm-pf.htm

There is better full frame glass out there but then you would be shooting full frame if you needed those.

The 11-16mm (16-24mm) coupled with the 18-200mm (27-300mm) covers everything you need, Add the 300mm (450mm) and you a great option for sports, birds, and isolated landscapes.

These are the three.

The Holy Trinity in photography is a phrase coined to convince photographers that they need to spend a ridiculously large amount of money to get a good picture.

And I have none of those (The "Holy Trinity" that I know about: the Nikon 14-24mm 2.8, the Nikon 24-70mm 2.8, and the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8.) and I do just fine! I have the same ones that came with your camera and I have TWO D7100's. I also have 1.8 primes - 35, 50 and 85 but the ones on my camera the most are the kit lenses 18-140 and 55-300.

The earliest use of the term I have run into was some years ago, and involved film cameras in a day when zooms were of doubtful quality. It simply meant start with a 50mm "standard" lens, add a wide angle and a long lens, often an 85mm to 100mm most useful for portraits.

It's called the Holy Trinity because when you get the invoice for the three lenses, you will make the sign of the cross.
