Finally getting to my computer to respond to the replies on this post. Sorry - busy day. First of all, Psergel, my drug of choice is an occasional Tylenol :). Thank you pkricker, I thought it was cool also but puzzling. And yes, warrior, I know I should use a tripod when shooting the moon. I was in a hurry, oops. And the winner to the solution is dcampbell52. I feel very embarrassed at the simple explanation. I looked at the dial on top of my camera and noticed that the effects setting was next to my manual setting. In the dark when I thought I was going to manual I obviously went to effects. Sorry for all the confusion caused by my mistake. I noticed that several others mentioned the effects setting also later on. Thank you to all who responded. Again, sorry for the confusion. (although it WAS fun!!!)

That's an effect called Color Sketch. Not much to see in the moon shot, but a street scene or an indoor scene with lots of contrast looks fun.

Something went very wrong with mine......

I used a Canon 7D With the "pop-up" flash firing......

What the hell happened?????????

See Below.

==============

Mine was on Manual as well...

f-13 // 1/20 Sec // ISO 400

So...???

Did you possibly have the dial set on one of the "Effects" programs?

CooL......

I like to experiment as well.

Try to shoot with Manual 50% or 70% of the time. I shoot in manual 90% of the time = Well.... I am very use to that "mode". I do admit that I like the Aperture Priority feature.
When I finely came over to digital (about 15 years ago) I only used manual as that is all that I knew. I looked at all the damn buttons and became overwhelmed. Seeing the "M" setting let me make use of the camera till I learned to see what the other stuff was on the box. Well.... I still like the Manual Mode - as I am a photographer.

I think that using the manual for ANYONE who is reading this will make a better photographer out of anyone wishing to pursue the art. There are plenty to books out on the market.... Might I suggest Bryan Peterson's book = "Understanding Exposure".

I have noticed that my pictures are better when I use manual. When I was first learning I learned it first and always used it. After awhile I read where a lot of photographers use Aperture most of the time so I switched. I'm gradually switching back to manual.
I am FAR from being a real photographer but I thoroughly enjoy trying to better myself.

If I may make a suggestion. I myself, use Aperture priority exactly the same way I use Manual shutter control. Only I will add or subtract exposure by using compensation controls rather then adjusting the shutter control, but it is doing exactly the same thing. This works well on cameras with compensation controls that are easy to adjust. You are doing exactly the same thing, only differently AND your camera exposure will always at least be "close" should you need to take a "grab shot" without time to fiddle or check.

Retired2014, just using this on your cellphone when shooting the moon for correct exposure.

Can someone tell me what happened here? I took a picture of the moon using flash (just experimenting). This is what I got. I checked the properties after downloading and noticed the metering was listed as pattern. What did I do to get this? Sorry it has motion blur. It was handheld.

I have no idea what happened (you have lots of good suggestions)...
but I kind of like it!

Completely off topic... Even though I never would have thought about using the flash for the moon shot, it produces some neat effects at night in a snowstorm. Makes the snowflakes look like they could knock you over.

I agree that the effect looks like solarization. Rufus
