Yes I will let you know. I will be deciding within a few months. I'm in no hurry since I have the 70d. I'm going to research some more. Maybe, even look into renting. Thank You All for the great advice and links. I knew that I would get help here. My Photography has come along way since I started the UUH forum. And a lot of it is because of reading all the great information on this forum.

:D

These are my choices: Canon 6d w/ 24-70L ii f/2.8 or Canon 5DIII w/ 24-70L f/4. No need to tell me other combinations, or other name brands, it's just between these two. I'm not sure which direction I'd like to go.

I would opt for the second choice, as that camera lets you do way more things. Both lenses are a good choice, but the M III sure gives you a whole plethora of options over the 6D!

The main thing is you're going Canon. You can't go wrong. I personally would get the 5DIII but that's coming from an amateur.

Your first option is a very good camera/lens combination that should last you a long time. The second is the basis of a system.

I have the 6D and I miss the expanded Auto Focus Points offered by the 5DMkiii.
I have the 24-105 F/4 but purchased the 70-200 F/2.8, not for the added length, but for the F/2.8 low light capabilities.

So .... I see and feel your pain. If you go with the 6D, you have the better of the two lenses. If you go with the 5DMkiii, you have the better of the two cameras. (in MHO).

You also have a good selection of lenses and a good back up camera (if you are keeping it).

I read that you won't need to make an immediate decision but there are only these two options available to you?

My recommendation ..... Find the camera you want with the lens you want and don't risk buying something that you may not appreciate or use later. We all have bought gear that may have been perfect for the moment, but not for the long run. Don't make that mistake!.

Soooo..... If you like the idea of having a 5Dmkiii and the 24-105 F/4 lens ... Hold out until you can find that option available to you.

...... OR ..... Make us all jealous and purchase the new Canon 5DS-r with the 24-105 F/4 lens, a battery grip, batteries, cards, a canon camera bag, a cheap flash and more stuff you will 'never' use for $4230.00!!! (The Amazon post from an American Brick and Mortar Store Front Dealer, is not attached, because ...... I don't want you blaming me later!....LOL)

Best of luck and keep us posted!

Oh boy. This line got to me: "My recommendation ..... Find the camera you want with the lens you want and don't risk buying something that you may not appreciate or use later. We all have bought gear that may have been perfect for the moment, but not for the long run. Don't make that mistake!."
Decisions, decisions, decisions. ..... OBTW, I am keeping my 70d.

I believe your original instincts are right: having shot both 24-70s and 24-105 the best lens by far is the f/2.8 24-70 L ll. I think it rates right up with Canon's best tele zooms ever produced. It is my main lens on my 5D mk lll but the F/2.8 70-200 L ll gets a lot of click time as well. As far as the holy trinity I have the F/4 17-40 and am looking to the F/2.8 16-35 in the near future. You will not regret the extra versatility of the F/2.8 L glass. If you do choose the 24-105 make sure you check eBay or Craigslist as there are tons of them on there and the prices are falling. It apperanty was a kit lens and folks unload them pretty fast. Good luck

Than you. I wish Canon made a 24-105 f/2.8.

Kit lens usually denotes a lesser quality lens. Not the case with the 24-105. It is an L lens and therefore one of Canon's best. It is a kit lens only to the extent that it has been offered in combination with some of Canon's full frame bodies. There are a lot of them in the marketplace not because people are quick to unload them but because it is a very popular lens that has been around for a pretty long time. Whatever lens choice the OP may eventually make, she doesn't have to worry about the 24-105 being an inferior product.

Ok, currently I have the 70D. My zoom is Sigma 18-300mm I also have the Canon 17-55mm (Love). I take mostly landscapes, and portraiture. The sports is only a couple times a year. I do macro with my 100mm also.

For "mostly landscape and portraiture" a 6D would be great! And, since you already have several fast primes (esp. for portraits), if it were me I'd fore-go an f2.8 zoom and just opt for an f4 or variable aperture "walkaround" zoom... either the 24-70/4L IS USM or the 24-105L IS USM or the newer 24-105 "STM" would likely be fine, but an even cheaper 28-135 IS USM might serve just fine, too. I use a 24-70/2.8L (first version) personally.... for portraiture, though, I actually like it better on a crop camera than on my full frame, where it always feels "a little short" to me.

I'd recommend doing whatever might leave some room in your budget for a wider landscape lens, such as the 16-35/4L IS USM or 17-40/4L USM or 20/2.8 USM . For landscapes, 24mm or 28mm just isn't wide enough on full frame for my tastes (I use a 20/2.8 presently... but am considering the 16-35/4, which is newer and sharper than the bigger, heavier and more expensive f2.8 version). To take full advantage of the FF camera, I would want to have a FF-capable wide angle lens for landscape, too.

Keep your 70D as a backup and for those occasional sports/action/wildlife shoots, where it's faster frame rate and more advanced AF system will serve well. The 17-55mm is a great lens on it, but longer is usually necessary for these types of shots and I'm not familiar with the Sigma 18-300mm... However I'm very suspicious of any 10X or 15X zoom, though it might do all you need for occasional use. Personally, I do a lot of this type of shooting and use a couple 70-200s (both an f4 and an f2.8) and a couple 300mm primes (also f4 and f2.8), sometimes with a high quality 1.4X (and, more rarely, a 2X on the f2.8 lens).

With the 100L, you're all set for macro on either FF or crop camera (personally I use the 100 USM non-L/IS version, along with several other macro lenses).

I would only recommend a further "step up" to the 5DIII if planning to only have it alone, selling off your 70D to help pay for it, for example. The 5DIII's faster frame rate and more sophisticated AF make it more versatile than the 6D.... BUT, if you give up the crop sensor camera and go FF only, you're going to need a much longer focal length lens for sports/action (and neither the 17-55 nor the 18-300mm will be usable on it). Where you use 200mm now, you'll need 300mm on the FF camera. Where you use 300mm now, you'll need 500mm on any FF model. A lot bigger, heavier and more expensive!
