For those with an IMac, at least one that is about 3 years old, you will have an SD card slot on the right side of the monitor. Convenient location. But, the CD slot is right above it. Yesterday, I reached over to put my SD in it's slot, and wasn't paying attention, and accidentally put it in the CD slot. I tried to retrieve it with a paperclip, but in so doing the CD slot gobbled it up. Good news, I had all the files on the SD card backed up, so I haven't lost anything. Bad news, it was a 256 gb card, worth about $100, and as you might expect, the CD slot will not work, I tried it. But then I don't use my CD slot except for an occasional program, which I can easily download from the internet, like print drivers. I don't use the CD for music, and I have several other SD cards of various sizes. So, be very careful putting in your SD card, it may be a new part of your CD drive. I am going to put some tape over the bottom of the CD slot to prevent a repeat.
I did the same thing a few months ago................
Feel first, insert second.
Feel first, insert second. Or, maybe, look first, insert second.
The feel first, insert second does not work, the slots feel exactly the same. Look first is the key, in which case they should have put it on the front. I noticed on the new IMac, the slot is in the back, which is not a good place. I have a USB card reader if I ever get a new IMac.
I also lost a card this way. Took the iMac to an Apple Store and they removed it it seconds with "pliers" they made from a folded a piece of paper. Once I got home I put a small piece of gaffers tape over the bottom of the CD slot so this could never happen again. ;)

Actually, the slots don't feel anything alike. The SD slot is about 1 1/4 inches, and the CD slot is about 5 inches. Anyone should be able to tell the difference.
I put two dot stickers, one green next to the SD card slot on the front bezel of the iMac, and a red dot sticker next to the CD slot.
I did the same thing once when I switched to SD cards from CF.
Vivo et disco.
Width wise, width wise, not length. When you feel it with your finger, the width of the SD slot is virtually identical to the width of the CD slot. You are feeling the bottom of the CD slot. Obviously you don't have an IMac.
I could also use a sharpie to mark the bezel on the front. A tiny mark would be all I would need.
I looked at the websites above, and the removal techniques used are if the SD card is still visible. There is a small thin gasket over the CD slot, and once you fiddle with it a bit, it got pushed passed the gasket never to be seen again.
As I said, I had a back up of all the stuff on the SD card, so I am ok, at some point I will take it to the Apple store, or a local computer repair company and have them open up the case and retrieve it.
Thanks for all your input. Glad I am not the only one, and for those with IMacs with the card slot on the side, maybe this will prevent someone from doing the same thing.
I anticipated that problem, and since I almost never use the CD slot, taped it over.

Well, obviously I do have one. The SD slot is also near the bottom of the side rail, and the CD slot is further up. I really don't see how anyone being just a bit careful could confuse the two.

:D Shortly after I switched from a 21" iMac to a 27 inch iMac with an SD card slot I did the exact same thing! Felt so confidant popping that card into the slot without looking , and damn it was like a vacuum sucked in in! :D
Easily retrievable by tilting the iMac up on its right side and carefully shaking a little, at least it was for me.
BTW - only did it once, never happened a second time ;)

Not about confusion, it all about assuming you are in the right slot and popping it in :) Only about 1/4 inches separates the two slots, and if you don't look, you can easily be in the upper slot, the BIG ONE ;)
