I've a 500mm lens that is shorter than my 50~300.

There will be many opinions. You choose.
From back in my film days a long lens was anything above the 50/55mm regular lens. My first long lens was a 135.
When I went digital, my camera came with two lenses: 18-55 and 55-200; by the looks of it, anything above 55 would be my new "long lens" (using the old film definition).
I would really like to get the 400-600 Tammy zoom, but the cost is out of the question so my 75-300 is my permanent long lens.
:-D There where long focus lenses and telephoto lenses in
the old days, but that was the era of film and bellows   :-D
I think quixdraw is correct. I have always considered the dividing line between "normal" and "telephoto" for 35mm FF lenses to be 85mm. Long lens is a qualitative expression that seems more journalistic than technical.

Longer mm's than a short one.....
I thought Millimeters were all the same length !!

Does anyone know at what length in mm a lens is considered a "long lens?"
anything longer than 36 inches.
A better term would be telephoto lens. An 85mm lens is a medium telephoto. A 100mm& 135 would be medium also. Anything longer would be telephoto & would be considered a long lens. Bab

Again, telephoto refers to lens design not length. But for 35mm and digital long lenses are telephoto in design

I would sincerely be interested in an educated answer to this question: How would one characterize a 105mm Macro lens?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is
THIS Rokinon 500mm an example of a long-focus lens?
Simpler design, inexpensive to make.

When I say telephoto or long lens, I am not referring to the actual length of the lens. I believe that the reference is to the fact that the lens allows a distant subject to be seen as much closer than it can be seen with a normal lens. Bab
