Hey Cholly, I think 10 years in college may have also guided you on the correct use of the apostrophe. :)

Hi all,
A few years ago I took a three or four week course offered by a local community rec group. The teacher discussed how to use the flash that came with our cameras. I recently took another local class taught by someone else and she said not to use flash and to increase ISO. personal preference, I suppose...what does everyone here do?

She is probably right . I never increas iso if using flash , that is crazy . I haven't been in a dim lit area yet that I haven't had a need to use a iso over
100 or 200 if using flash . As long as your subject is lit by the flash . I think you took what she said the wrong way . She said not to use flash and increase
Iso , I think you took her to mean don't use a flash but increase iso instead . It was just a play on the wrong way to put it

There is no "right" answer. Ultimately you should learn how and when to use camera lighting via the built in flash or one attached to your hot shoe. You should also learn about other forms of artificial lighting and when and how to use them. The same is true for when and how to use natural light. I do wonder about the second teacher who told you not to use flash at all but rather just raise the ISO. That may be her prejudice regarding the limitations of built in flashes. But built in flashes can be very effective such as a fill light outdoors. Its a question of knowing both your tools and when to use them.

For her to be more clear she should have said , and more than likely did :
And don't go using a flash and increasing your iso to take the pic.

Perhaps it did.

Or... just MAYBE... and I may be going out on a limb here... PERHAPS the standards of grammar and use of punctuation on an internet message board dedicated to photography are understandably LESS strict and stringent than those expected to be used in the composition and defense of a dissertation.

I don't know... how do people 'round here generally view a person who nit picks spelling, grammar and punctuation?

Both. For indoors, I usually shoot in aperture priority, increase ISO to 800, and use a big bounced and diffused flash for fill. The flash doesn't have to put out as much power when the ISO sensitivity is increased and the combination gives a nice fill but yet ambient light is still there as well. Outdoors, I may use ISO 200 to 400, and set the flash to fill for portraits, couples, and groups. I always use a Gary Fong-type diffuser with the flash pointed straight up.

I prefer natural light But some times you have to open up the shadows with flash fill. some sporting events they don't want you to use flash

Dunno mate, maybe you're right.

I’m just a country boy who doesn’t have such a sensitive skin that takes offence at an obviously tongue-in-cheek comment about apostrophes. It’s also possible, just possible, that you didn’t notice the grin at the conclusion of my remark . . .

I agree entirely, standards should be more relaxed on an internet message board and I hope that your reply to ‘Stay at home Mum’ was not really a composed dissertation about bats or that you’ve been watching too much David Attenborough. . .

I’m also not so full of my own erudition that it’s blocking my ability to absorb some harmless sledging from a fellow photographer even though a lot of water separates us.

Furthermore, I think you’re in danger of falling off the limb, on which you have just gone out, as you now go on to elicit support for your argument by inviting other happy snappers to get involved.

It’s probably best to terminate this particular thread right now Cholly. ;)

It is I... Oz... who is the country boy in this comparison. Quite literally born in the woods.

At night.

But not LAST night.

Which means I have NO problem whatsoever recognizing a "straw man" OR a bad case of Transference.

Amazing how you pointed out the grin in YOUR statement but IGNORED the one concluding the statement which OBVIOUSLY got under YOUR skin.

In fact, it got so far under YOUR tender fleece that YOU felt the need to upbraid ME for something completely inconsequential and immaterial to the discussion at hand.

But then, as someone who has NO problem making FALSE assumptions and therefore, jumps to incorrect conclusions based on that conjecture, I shouldn't be surprised that you somehow MISSED the ironic hypocrisy of your last post.

ZOOMED.... right over your head. Did you duck?

Based on the OP's original scenario and question, I think F8lee gave the most appropriate answer.

In view of that, I recommend promoting F8 to F11 ;)

Punctuation is not a lack of education giveaway...not being able to understand the communication is. Poor spelling of simple words is another giveaway. But, I agree, on this forum rules are lax and as long as I understand the thought written I wouldn't highlight errors. That said, some here clearly dropped out of school early or were socially promoted, and their inability to effectively communicate is astounding.

There is quite enough irrelevant comments on this forum - without resorting to spelling and punctuation !

As others have said. There is time for using the flash and low ISO and time for using high ISO without flash. Also I often use the flash with ISO 1600 because my camera can deliver decent images at such an ISO. Using high ISO when using flash uses less flash power and let the flash recycle quickly so I am always ready for the next shot and the flash won't overheat.
