Frankly, mostly it doesn't matter. Either it evens out over time, or it becomes noticeable. Then it is a different discussion with different parameters... :-D :-D

Cheers!

My sentiments exactly, though rarely stated.

The lens was a Nikon 70-300 ED. The lens was purchased new. The push/pull was not working but the lens was focusing fine. Pictures were clear and sharp. Maybe 6 years old less than 4000 clicks on camera. The lens was sent to Rick in July, he said he had the parts to fix it return would be 2 to 3 weeks. Then Rick said he didn't have the parts and return the lens. Then he went in the hospital. We waited patiently and prayed for his health. Brenda's major concern was anyone there with him during this crisis.

Rick gets out of the hospital and says he found the parts to fix the lens and would return it shortly. I get another email saying he can't get the parts and will return the lens. That was two months ago. Brenda sent another email asking if the lens had shipped. Rick said yes she should have it in a week or so, One month later Brenda emailed and said she had not received the lens and ask for tracking information.

Rick said he didn't have it.

That's the last we have heard from Rick. Good guy fallen on hard times or scan man you be the judge. Rick has failed to follow up on the lens. Four months.

If you know his home address, town, you might check the largest local paper obituaries. Hope you miss, but it would settle the why. If bad, you should try to contact his estate administrator who could have your lense.

Thank you for stating it so much better than I was able to. I could NOT AGREE more with your statements. With medical issues it could be anything from medications that alter his normal activities and thought processes to worse case he has been permanently changed due to the illness. I wish him well.

If we want to be thorough about this, calling Rick "LIAR LIAR" is a little extreme. That requires deliberate intent to deceive, and I do not think we have any evidence to support that.

However, the tone has been softened and the lens has eventually been returned.

There is a balance here. Rick has been doing business with a good reputation for many years according to the preponderance of information on UHH. He has recently been seriously ill, has moved his business premises, and we do not know about the extent or state of his recovery.

On the other hand, Rick is being very poor with communication, and good communication is critical to maintaining a good business reputation when something goes wrong. For a long time there was complete radio silence from Rick. Finally he began showing up on UHH periodically and put up a landing page for his website stating the e-mail and telephone should be restored soon. What I think is about a month or so later that same message is still there.

Rick is not without blame in this regrettable scenario and these repeated situations where people post about the issues they are experiencing is damaging to his business and reputation. Improved communication would go a long way towards rectifying this. I believe that Rick is doing his best, and he appears to be an honest trader, but the delays and lack of communication are a sign that something is not yet back to normal and could be a sign of potential future problems.

I wish Rick well, but some of this is caused by his own inaction and lack of communication or organization.
If we want to be thorough about this, calling Rick... (show quote)

Some of the fault here is with Nikon.

Sometime earlier this year I got an email when that Nikon was changing their company service and repair policies and would no longer be selling a lot of repair parts to independent shops. Now they only supply parts to factory authorized repairers... which basically means folks like Rick can no longer get parts.

And that is quite possibly why Rick originally thought he could repair the lens, but then found out he couldn't get the necessary parts.

Most other camera manufacturers will sell repair parts to anyone with a credit card.

Nikon claims their change in policy is to insure proper, high quality repairs. But the result is that you'll now have far less choice where to get repairs done, will likely have to wait longer for the work to get done and should expect to pay more since their authorized facilities must adhere to set procedures and pricing. For example, "factory repairs" typically dictate that even if a switch is just dirty, so needs cleaning and lubrication, it will instead get replaced with a new one. And rather than just pay for labor, the customer will have to pay for both labor and parts. Or, worse, the entire module that the switch is a part of will be replaced, and the parts charges will be even higher.
