I've read where there are 10 air worthy B-17's and 1 B-29 (Fifi) and "Doc" is raising $ for air worthiness test flights. Then there will be 2 B-29's that are restored and flying.

Thanks for the answer, my dad was in the Air Force too, but I didn't have these questions when he was around...

My father was a Top Turret/Engineer on one of these (Ol' Battle Axe). Two side gunners, one tail, one ball, one nose, pilot, co pilot, radio (could be a side gunner as well), and either a bombardier or togglier to release the bombs. Great pictures of a marvelous (really) aircraft flown by very young men with incredible bravery.

Great coverage of the plane. By your pictures, it looks like it takes a minimum of 7 men just to fly the plane & man the guns. Somebody has to supply the ammo to the gunners and release the tie-downs on the bombs carried. does anybody out there know, how many men it took to fly on a mission? It's amazing how it only takes a single pilot to fly a plane and fire the laser guided missils now....

The B-17 had a normal crew of 10. Pilot, Co-Pilot, Bombardier, Navigator, Flight Engineer, Radio operator, 2 waist gunners, Ball turret gunner, tail gunner. The plane shown is a B-17G. The Memphis Belle is a B-17F. She was the first to finish 25 missions.

A popular misconceptionÂ…

The 358th B-17F #41-24577 Hell's Angels, from which the Group later named itself, completed its 25th mission on 13 May 1943. It became the first 8th Air Force B-17 to complete 25 combat missions. The Memphis Belle, a 91st BG(H) B-17, sometimes reputed to claim the first 25-mission feat, completed its 25th mission on 19 May 1943, six days after the Hell's Angels. The Memphis Belle was,
however, the first 8th AF B-17 to
complete 25 missions and be returned
to the United States. The crew that accompanied the Memphis Belle was a makeup crew of men who had completed 25 missions. It was not the original Memphis Belle, Captain Morgan crew. Hell's Angels went on to complete 48 missions and delayed returning to the United States on its own "Flag-Waving Tour" until 20 January 1944.

Beautiful set, I have a connection to the B-29 as my Uncle Bill (I never knew him as I was born in 1950) was a pilot and was shot down over the Bay of Biscay in 1944. He was never found. Great photos of a great plane.
