How does the non-Nikon repair shop get spare parts? Nikon's stated policy is that they will not sell parts to non-Nikon service providers. Nikon has really tightened down the screws. If you can't get parts, you can't repair cameras, right?

I am not sure but I think that it is possible to get parts the same way as you can buy gray market cameras. I already called to repair shop and asked them if they can fix Nikon D750, they said "Yes". How can repair shops repair cameras if they do not have parts?

When people are discussing buying grey market cameras they every time talking about warranty. I would like to know how often do you need your USA warranty.

When I owned Alpa cameras, I used the warranty about every two weeks. That's how long it usually took to go from here to Karl Heitz in New York for repair and back.

It's true Nikon no longer sells parts to independent repair facilities, but Nikon is not the only place to get repair parts. I have sources all over the world, from Texas to Chicago and all the way to India and China. In fact, I get some parts from the same supplier as Nikon. I pay a little more than they do for them but I make up for it on the labor.

Granted, there are some repairs that simply need to be done by a Nikon facility, but by and large, most repairs can be handled with ease, gray market or not.

Thanks for the quick response, Rick. You obviously have to go the extra step or 2 to complete Nikon repairs. Could you give us an idea of what repairs are best left to Nikon?

Sure. Anything that will require reprogramming. This includes main circuit boards, metering systems, some AF systems and image sensors. The good part is I can usually pick up these parts from a trusted re-seller already programmed and they are plug & play. Although, Most major parts, like shutters and aperture control units are readily available on the market.

We're all glad you are feeling better and are back on your feet.

I'm still unpacking from the move to Colorado Springs, but things are slowly returning to normal.
