I trust them more than Al Jazeera, but that may be my prejudice. I was not part of my family that was killed by Muslims and I wanted to understand them that is why I read the Quran in English to try to understand them, but all I got was exclusion and hate for Christens and Jews, not exactly my cup of tea. So to sum up I try not to be bigoted, but it is hard for me.

It's good that you try, it isn't easy. If we can break down the divisions and see ourselves as human first we will be making a world better for our families.

Orange,

All that crap, none of which is pertinent to the original topic. Congratulations. Finally found something that appeared to be a soapbox......

I agree that it is not pertinent to the original topic, and I would not claim otherwise. The comment to which I responded is the "crap" that you should be having a problem with, as that was not pertinent to the topic.

I did not drive this thread into political controversy, let alone into the realm of bigotry. I stated from the beginning that there was no cause for this to be politically controversial. I still see it that way.

However, bigotry must be responded to whenever and wherever it emerges. Someone posted an outrageous antisemitic comment on this thread, and people responded to it, as they should. There have also been a number of bigoted comments directed at Muslims. The idea that Muslims in general are not speaking out against extremists, and are therefore to be presumed to be in sympathy with the extremists, is false. Generalizing about people based on their race or creed is bigotry.

I agree, but first we must take care of those that wish us harm, such as ISIL and other terrorists that do not have a human agenda in mind.

Then why is their religious writing just the opposite?

I don't know that to be a fact, and I don't think would be relevant if it were true. It seems to somehow become true in the minds of many people just over the last decade or so. Before that, it was never heard. There are many teachings in the Bible and other religious texts that are not in alignment with what the members practice or believe today. Why? I don't know. Humans are imperfect, I guess.

How many Christians obey the command to not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material, or to not work on the Sabbath, or not trimming your beard?

Fair enough...then please answer this question with intellectual honesty: *IF* the "radical Islamists" represent a minority as we are led to believe by politicians and the media - and Islam spokespersons...THEN WHY in the name of G_d ( or Allah if you see the need to call on the Moon Goddess of ancient pre-Islam paganism) don't the MAJORITY of the moderates subjugate or eradicate the crazies?
If you can rationalize that away - you are no better than the greatest threat to current civilization - that being the radical factions of Islam...or Islam itself given hat Islam cannot/will not harness/wipeout it's own problems. Period.

Hey Boyo, Not only can you not spell, but a few others in this deteriorating thread explicitly asked for some references of Muslims condemning the atrocities of certain Islamic extremists. This is what was provided.

Do you not understand that in making comments like this you reduce yourself to the same level as the very extremists that you condemn? Just another extremist in different clothes.

One may ask why certain other countries no longer hold the USA in the esteem that we might like it to. I'm talking about our allies here, not our enemies. It seems you are assisting our decline on the global stage, not helping it.

I am not a Muslim, but I greatly appreciate Orange's listing of numerous Muslim leaders who have publicly condemned terrorism.

I have refrained from commenting in depth here, but I am distressed by the number of comments that have been made on all sides that reflect minimal knowledge of the complicated situation in the Middle East. As one who has taught non-violent direct action techniques to both Israelis and Palestinians, and as one who has also taught psychological trauma treatment techniques in the area, I can attest to the large numbers of positively committed people on both sides of this issue.

Ill-informed rhetoric and biased platitudes are simply not helpful to understanding and solving the myriad issues in the Middle East.

Have you read the writings of many self-proclaimed Christians recently?

We have animosity, hypocrisy, and prejudice in all factions. Our job may be to try and overcome that.

Sadly, I'm beginning to agree that this topic should be moved to the attic, since it has descended to a very low level, and nothing to do with your own contributions.

Sigh!

This can't go in the Attic. It does not meet the Attic's standards for vulgarity, hatefulness, bigotry and personal insult.

Not really unless your in the armed forces or a significant political figure, how can you fight terrorism?

We are on the internet and sharing common interests I honestly don't see much difference between us bruce, it helps we almost speak the same language. The more we mix online the more we see what we have in common.

Ken - WHEN I need you to interrupt a back and forth with a specific individual, I will throw you a banana. In the meantime, continue grinding your organ.
