You are a silly bunch of folk. you buy warrenties that are crap think everything so called 'gray' is rubbish and you love to pay the highest price !!! you don't even realise what the highest prices is - bet you would baulk at the uk prices ! THEN THEN you would think the gray market - which incidentally is not the black market but just a way of avoiding rip offs .

If I were not in a good mood, I think I could resent this entire post.

In over 45 years, I have never had the need to use my warranty. I have sent cameras in to be checked and re "tuned" after 2-3 years, but never a warranty problem.

But I suspect that if I bought a grey market, that would be the time.

Never. Owned Nikon gear since early 70's, and Canon since 2005. Still own both. No issues.

Why? Gray market cameras and lenses have the same quality as camera and lenses bought in authorized stores.

I tried NoSocks suggestion and the store said it wasn't their problem. Told me to send it back to the manufacturer. Last time I ever set foot in the store. I no longer shop Competitive Camera in Dallas and give my business to Arlington Camera in Arlington, TX.

Service was excellent but I was without my go to lens for weeks altogether. And will be again shortly.

I haven't used any of my warranties and since everything is out from under the warranty, I guess I never will. This includes my 28-75 grey market f/2.8 Tammy that I bought (on Ebay) from Canada in order to save almost $200 (US).

well, here we are, Erica (late spouse) and me in dominguez hills at the new (then) velodrome, hired to make photographs of the pre-olympic bicycle track racing. the velodrome was brand new and really quite wonderful, as were my 3 nikon fe cameras with the md-12 motor drives. Erica was using her own couple of these, which had pretty much just come out. so anyway, i'm motoring away through the hours and suddenly, one of my drives refuses to advance. as it is exactly 2 weeks old, i take what i consider to be exception to this. it becomes, suddenly, a personal issue with me, as it stops on the 12th exposure of my trusty roll of tri-x. do i go to camera number 2 or 3, hell no!!! this piece of (ahem) is going to work, whether it wants to or not. so, i immediately take the appropriate measure and slam the motor against the cinder block wall. the motor cycles, i make another exposure, it does not cycle, i slam the motor, once again, against the cinder block wall, it cycles and so on until we reach the magic exposure of 36. i then say the hell with it and go to camera and drive #2 and so the weekend goes by.

returning to Fresno (as now, then the home of absolutely nothing) i immediately hie to my local camera store from whence i purchased this wretched failure of an md-12 drive and we send it off, under warranty, to Nikon. and we begin to process the film. all goes well until the last roll. now, as most of you know, mother raised me to be an insufferable snob, and in that she suceeded only too well. i do not buy rolls of tri-x, i load my own. and the last roll is a mislabled roll of 12 exposures. i of course cannot say nothing to Erica (she, who must be obeyed) and confess. Erica was always an honest person. she accompanies me to the camera store when the drive comes back from Nikon. and of course she tells the guys at the store what cody, the pure, did. and i get my repaired motor drive back, along with a pithy letter telling me, in so many words, that the next time i strip every single gear in the unit, a techician will personally hop on the plane at Tokyo airport and personally feed the drive to me! (honestly, the nerve of some people). well, i do not take this lying down. i immediately contact the nikon rep and told him, if that's they way they felt about it, they could keep their nikons and i'd start using Exaktas; hah! that showed them!

Nikon USA will not touch your non-USA equipment if and when it needs to be repaired after warranty expires. Don't bother sending it to Nikon Service for CLA - they will return it and charge you for return shipping. Of course, you can ship it to Nikon Canada if it needs servicing. That beats shipping it back to Japan. I buy Nikon new or refurbished thus ensuring that Nikon Service USA will work on my cameras and lenses should they need it. The D5300 I just bought for my son that died after 3 months was a refurb. Nikon fixed it and will continue to cover it after the expiration of the 90-day warranty period. To some us, knowing Nikon Service will be there when we need them is reassuring - specially since Nikon no longer provides parts to non-Nikon service providers.

Never bought a camera or lens of any make that I needed to repair or send back. And, like many on this site, I have bought a lot of both over the years.

Why would anyone buy a grey market camera??

Since the early eighties used USA warranty. Nikon D800 problem with card reading. They fixed software. And 10 years ago bought the small Lieca and it needed a new sensor in a few months.
